How much did your power steering cost?
Just got a quote back from a reputable indie saying that adding power steering to my '63 would be about $5400. As usual my guess on the price was off by only 100%. I should note that my car has a LT1 engine so fitment may be a problem. Should I stay with mostly original parts or go with a full rack and pinion change out? If you've done this how much did yours cost and how long ago was it done?

The 5.4K quote... is that using stock GM parts, or does it include a rack/pinion change-out?

Bob,
$5,400.......what? Am I missing something?
Let me be crystal clear...your "dude" is RIPPING YOU OFF!!!!!!!
Here is how this works:
$1300-ish for rack and pinion from Speed Direct...its a bolt-on kit...install takes a couple hours max. Recommend an alignment after install.
http://cmc.speeddirect.com/items.asp...atus=0&Tp=&Bc=
Borgeson conversion: $985.00...same deal, install takes a couple hours max and recommend an alignment.
http://www.borgeson.com/xcart/catalo...-p-1-c-97.html
With the Borgeson on a '63, you may have to cut the steering column shaft...sounds daunting, but it's not a big deal.
Either kit is a very nice addition/upgrade over the stock manual or stock power steering system.
I have done both...I prefer the Borgeson...the rack and pinion is overkill on these old frames...
Did I say $5400 is obscene?

My independent mechanic has bid it with the Borgeson box but without the rack & pinion. I'm thinking that as the price gets higher I want the rack & pinion but I can't go nuts on the cost either. The p/s box is leaking now and I don't want to repair something that will just give me problems later.

I'm with Frankie. Ob. scene.
Your lt1 will mount a PS pump, I assume this will work with the Borgeson with proper hose routing. Otherwise would the serpentine belt itself be a $20 belt in the new proper length. You know they self tension, right?
Run far away from your Indie.

Damn! You can add electric power steering for less. That's a crazy quote! And I thought the below option was crazy expensive!

As others have posted, the Borgeson PS system costs $985.00, and although I've never done one myself, I know others who have done it, in their own garages... with plain old hand tools.... in 4-5 hours.
$5400. total minus $985. = $4415. for labor and incidentals. That's a TON of money for labor and incidentals.
I know that many of the serpentine belt systems are pricey. I have a 56 Chevy hot rod and a 37 Chevy street rod, and have looked at the costs involved in complete serpentine systems.
You might be able to buy a PS pump pulley that will work with your current system. Thus, you would need only a new belt.

When you say LT-1 is that the GM 350 engine used from 92-97 or the old 350 block?

My 66 convertible had manual steering, I used all new parts and a Borgeson box. Total cost was less than $ 1,350 , four years ago. I was so thrilled with the results I sprung for a Eric Freeman Steering wheel. No regrets!
