Black plates on!
Finally! If you think dealing with the DMV for regular stuff is horrible... this was a new circle of Hell. But it was worth it. Plates restored by Brian Mabry from Cleveland, Tennessee.

Very nice.
Remind me, is Cali a mandatory two-plate state? It has been almost 30 years since I left there.

Probably didn't have one when the plates were restored. DMV will give you the month sticker.I have a set with no year or month, but they are in an original "Harry Mann" (where originally purchased) ring, but just when it is parked.

With California YOM (year of manufacture) plates, you have to go to the DMV and present the front and rear plates with the correct year decal for your car on the rear plate. They take pictures of the plates and send the pictures to Sacramento for final approval. You hang onto the plates. California DMV will mail you the new registration and month and year stickers usually within 45 days. The hardest part is finding the original year sticker. That part makes no sense to me as you end up replacing it with the new current year sticker from the DMV.

Do you know your dealership?
Also I here in California have been fix ticketed in the Corvettes for no front plate, but """""probably because I was caught at excessive speed """""" and the entire car was being eyeballed. I have jerry-rigged (how did jerry get credit for that phase?)-- German soldier Jerry or Gerry or Jerry the GI? well Gerry-rigged onto the front but pulled those back off after the inspection. But I would say they tend to leave classic cars alone, unless you are me! I last was trying to do one of those 427 S/C flip license plate setups but couldn't find a Cobra guy that knew what I was talking about. They flipped up when moving for airflow and fell back down at the traffic stop light (at first I thought that was a little backwards until I employed my fine engineering level mind!).

I think you are mixing two phrases - jury-rigged on one hand (definition should be obvious) and Gerrymandering on the other, from a former Mass. Governor Elbridge Gerry who redrew state senate districts to favor his party (in 1812, that kind of political cr@p has been going on forever).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GerrymanderingThe boundaries of one of those districts was said to look like a salamander, hence "Gerrymandering".
More than you ever wanted to know, eh?

I was watching some TV recently, like on how things got their names!

New York went back and forth. My '40 Chevy has to have 2 plates. My '55 Nomad has 1. Then we went back to 2 plates in the 60s and have been 2 plates since. The problem is not all law enforcement knows which is correct for the year of the car.

Here is a shot of mine. When I bought the car it was completely apart. The seller already had the 1960 plates that he had intended to use, he threw them in with the sale.

I sent my $50 in about a year ago, and still never heard from California DMV when I could expect my new black plates. Of course, Jerry Brown cashed my check a year ago too !

I think the OP is talking about using old plates he already had, not ordering the new repops thru the new DMV program. Two different things.
