Default New Mufflers for my Corvette

I have been reading many of the posts concerning midyear Vette mufflers. I am confused by the wide range of opinions about each option. In the case of the N11s from Corvette Central comments range from "they sound like stock" to "they are too loud". I have listened to many video sound clips but those don't tell me what I need to know. I don't want to have to buy a set and put them on my car only to have to remove them again. I want some mufflers that are more aggressive sounding than stock but I also want to be able to hear my stereo when cruising down the road. I also do a lot of driving around the city with a lot of stop and go. My Vette is a 1965 convertible 327/300 with a 4 speed trans. If I get the N11s will I be able to enjoy some music while driving?

I just went through this very same question. At the risk of offending differing opinions, I will say this, there is no one size fits all solution.

What I found, no surprise, is that one man's ceiling is another man's floor, in that some folks like theirs louder than others, and in many (most?) cases, the owner that found what they are happy with will say "this is what you want!"

I suppose it is akin to women and their shoes - no one sound works for every owner. Add to it that only essentially identical cars will produce the same sounds, so a 63 340HP car will not make the same sounds as yours.

The best guess I can give you is to try to locate a car local to you with the same drivetrain setup as yours and hear it in person. Otherwise, you are still kind of guessing.

I am in the process of installing a set of lightly used N11 repros (thanks Bill) so that I can get rid of my noisy as heck (and crappy sounding) Cherry Bomb glass packs. Funny thing is, acquaintances of mine that like open pipe Harleys love the sound of my glass packs, so go figure.

I am in total agreement with you. I just don't like to spend a couple hundred bucks and a bunch of time on a gamble. I also have a Harley with straight pipes and I love the sound of it, but it doesn't have a radio. I think riding in some ones car that has N11s is what I would have to do in order to find out what I need to know.

Yep, but try find one with at least a similar motor and gearing. Even the intake heat riser arrangement can alter the sound in these cars. Good luck.

As I've said in previous posts, I like Magnaflows in terms of both sound and performance.

I installed the n11's in my 65 roadster with 327-300. In my opinion, they are pretty quiet. I would like for them to be louder, and wonder whether that will be the case after putting some miles on them.

Thanks for the recommendation. Was going to poke in here, but I think the general description of our mufflers' sound from our website's FAQs really sums up what you'll get nicely:

Answer: Our mufflers will provide a deep, throaty but smooth tone at all RPM's. At idle and cruise speeds it will not be much louder than stock in most cases. But step on it, and it will become more aggressively toned, while not becoming overbearing and keeping the passenger compartment drone to a minimum.
Hope that helps the OP!

Put CC n11's on my 300 HP Coupe and yes they are a little louder but not much. The sound tracks you listen to are mostly high horse or big block cars with loppier cams. Find someone with a similar motor before you spend the money and time to change over.

Be prepaired to have the aftermarket mufflers custom attached as most of them are universal in fit...That means if your without a tubing bender or friend with a muffler shop they are not going to fit without some extra adjustments and tube bending....

Walker Dynomax are excellent mufflers, not really cheap, however they are terrific with modified engines......not a grapefruit can.sound......

I am very pleased with the exhaust note from Magnaflows from CC. (327/300HP w/auto).

I used Paragon's pipes and off road mufflers for 63 and am a bit disappointed. They are very muted.

As soon as I finish everything, I'm headed to the Magnaflow installation center.

Exactly, from my understanding the N-11's from the some of these vendors are the same that are done for CC.

I have Dynomax Super Turbo's and they are just loud enough to let you know a vette is coming down the road. A buddy has the N11's and they are a little louder than my Dynomax's......but not too loud. I think they sound great, and with both you can actually hear the radio, and carry on a conversation.

Not sure whether you want a completely stock appearance under the car, but if not do yourself a favor and put in a crossover pipe between the exhaust pipes. A good place is right behind the transmission crossmember. This will work with whatever mufflers you choose; sound will be reduced at part throttle and will be a bit raspy when you hit the gas hard.

This is what the OEM sounds like. What does the repop sound like for those of you that have them?
