Default plastic sheet paint booth (garage, fans system)

You have to see C3 owner n.g.hayes's home garage plastic sheet paint booth set up on page 7.

First few pages show awesome mechanical work done to this '68 vert, I'm definitely subscribing to see how the body/paint turns out. I can't spend the kind of money being talked about around here on the C1/C2 forum for a paint job, so this will be my route one day. Enjoy!

I had a renter in one of my houses who painted cars on the side in the detached garage...he put up neon lights, fans and plastic sheets hanging everywhere. I know what most here will say about such a setup but some damn nice paint jobs came out of that garage. In fact, I bought my first '66 Mustang from the guy after he painted it in that home brewed booth..

Is neon better than florescence? Longer uninterrupted tubes I suppose.

I've seen guys mount regular T-5HO flourescent lights on the walls of a 'booth'. Hanging plastic, using fans, and a wet concrete floor. My '67 GTO was painted that way 22 years ago. Still looks good. Keep the dust and bugs out and wear a respirator, and you'll be ok.

Here is a guy from the C4 Forum who painted his 91 in the garage and made a series of You Tube videos along the way:

I've painted a few cars in my garage and have found that the plastic sheets aren't really worth the effort. Sure, something may fall in the paint but by the time you cut and buff the paint they all but disappear. BTW, I always paint in single stage(I think it looks better than BC/CC and is much easier to repair).

Painted my black Cobra replica in a PVC pipe and plastic spray booth. An Air Conditioning repair guy gave me a squirrel cage blower and I set it up in one end with a row of filters across the other end. I had excellent air flow through the booth. But of course I used an air supplied respirator and helmet. It came out very nice with PPG SS Concept.

Even if I had all the money in the world, I'd still like to paint my own car. There's something magical about working on something, and then standing back and thinking "I did that".

Plastic sheets/tents and exhaust fans will keep the rest of garage and tools free from over spray.

If you have a good set of filters, (at least 32 sq. feet) and the sheet seams are taped real good, that will prevent outside dust from getting on the car, However any wind movement will dislodge any dust that is on the inside of the tent and could get on the car.

The first time that you use it may be fine, any overspray that will collect in the inside of the tent will eventually cause trouble. Entering and leaving will cause problems. Anyone opening any garage doors will also cause problems.

Have all paint inside the booth so that you don't have to leave the tent or exit the tent from the exhaust end of the booth.

Wet floors inside and outside the tent and a good ground on the car are helpful.

Ps, if you are subject to OSHA rules and are caught, I'l see you in 5 to 10 years.

Yes, you do have to take some precautions with plastic sheeting. On each set up to paint I first turned on my fan and then use my air hose to blow down the walls and ceiling and let the enclosure exhaust out before wiping down the car. But there is a plastic sheeting that is a better product to use for this purpose. I couldn't find my link I thought I had saved but I believe it's this 3M product.

Did you use it in a garage or outside in the driveway?

the PVC pole structure works but Zipwall is faster / easier and you can create a "door" https://www.zipwall.com/. The number of Poles you need depends on how much positive or negative pressure (you need to decide this also) that you have. the plastic will bow in or out quite a bit between poles.

Look into renting a real spraybooth, you be a lot better of, in central CA a couple of months ago a guy burned down his place and two cars by screwing around with a makeshift place to paint i a regular garage, plastic sheeting and household fans etc
