Default Original aircleaner on Edelbrock carburettor

Hi!
I am from sweden and a big fan of corvettes and now I have my third one that is from 1963, my first was a 1973 and the second was from 2001. My -63 is almost original but there is some minor changes done. My carburetor is a new edelbrock 1406 (replacement for original carter 4bbl, 300hp engine) and I would like to replace the edelbrock aircleaner to original dual snorkel, to look like original. Can someone tell me if the original fits on edelbrock, that is about 5 inches wide?

The Edelbrock carburetor's air horn will have to be changed to a Carter AFB airhorn in order for the original 63 dual snorkle air cleaner base to fit, due to the lager diameter of the Edelbrock's airhorn.

I think about the best you can do is look for a slightly later air cleaner base from a Holley-equipped car, that will work with your original top. Edelbrock carbs have the same base opening as Holleys. I'm not that familiar with 63 - 67 small block air cleaner parts so I'm not completely sure this will work.

That's an interesting thought about putting an original Carter top on an Edelbrock carb. Theoretically that could be possible. I wonder if anyone has tried it?

The original carburetor and air cleaner base for your '63 had a 4 7/32 inch hole. Most carbs and air cleaners today now have 5 ¼ inch openings. So, your original '63 air cleaner base won't fit on your newer 1406 Edelbrock carb.

I can verify that you can swap air horns on your '63 Corvette carb and the 1406 Edelbrock. I've done this. Works great. In this way, you can use the 1406 Edelbrock carb bottom and your old '63 Corvette carb top (air horn). Your old '63 Corvette air cleaner base will then fit that hybrid carb just fine. If you do this swap, you'll also be able to use the original '63 hard fuel line from the pump to the filter and carb. (You weren't using rubber hose and barb fittings were you? Bad, bad.)

I've heard you can buy adapters to adapt 4 7/32 carbs to 5 ¼ air cleaners and vice versa. I never found them. But that's not to say you won't find them. Even if you found one, it might raise the carb too much and hit the hood. There's not much room in there. The air cleaner lid is already close to the underside of the hood. If you do this, don't slam the hood closed.

A Holley base will fit the carb hole but the linkage won't work. Since the snorkels are in the base I'm not sure you have any options but to modify the base. An adapter might work but that set up is very tall compared to a Holley so you probably wont be able to close the hood.

Here it is: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1963-65-CARTER-AFB-LID-6-1518-CORVETTE-CHEVY-3460S-3461S-3720S-3721S-NICE-/251891603464?hash=item3aa5e8d808&vxp=mtr
This part will bolt right up to the bottom of your Edelbrock 1406. No fuss. No muss. And your air cleaner and fuel line will fit perfectly. For $37.95 all your problems are solved.

Or just put a factory correct Carter AFB on the car like it should have and be done with it. Edlebrock's are nothing but blingy clones of the AFB anyway, just with the manufacturer's name splayed across it like a 17 year old kid would do...

They aren't that hard to find, I sold one a few months back.

It seems to be an alternative way, instead of changing my edelbrock to the original carter and by the way, I admit there is a rubber hose bad bad ;-)

Yes but I'm will need some extra parts that not are included on that lid and I dont have the original carburetor to pick it from.

It turns out you can go from a 4-7/32" carb to a 5-1/8" [not 5-1/4"] air cleaner size, but I can't find an adapter that goes the other way. There MUST be one out there somewhere in Hot Rod Land, but I only searched eBay:

I'll have to think about whether I should buy a refurbished carter carburetor

Yes I agree, I found some spacers and adapter kit at Mr.Gasket, but this will probably have the air cleaner raised some inch for to get place for the one inch smaller air cleaner
