Default I lost control of my dads Corvette

My dad has a 1963 Corvette that my mom bought him in 1974. We rebuilt the car in 2008. I was out cruising around Friday night. I came around a corner and goosed it a little. Then came around a second corner and just nailed it. Well, all I remember is going one way, then the other, then hitting something and then coming all the way around before I stopped. I thought Holy S$%& what just happened. I took out a mail box. Now I have to figure out how to fix this situation. I pulled up into the driveway of the home, did a quick once over on the car and knocked on the door. Let resident know I will replace the mail box. The only damage to the car was a broken mirror. Holy crap could this have been worse. Luckily the mailbox post was so rotten that you could have knocked it over if you leaned on it. Got the car home, dad is on vacation, hey I can fix this before he gets home. Called on Monday to order the mirror, and one place after another told me this early 1963 mirror is on back order. Well time to come clean with dad and let him know what happened. All went fairly well. But I could not have been taught a more valuable lesson. This will NEVER happen again. Thoroughly embarrassed to do this to dads car. This will be repaired and again, NEVER happen again. Somebody was watching over me that night, what if it was a tree. Makes me shiver just thinking about that

Default Wow

Chris: Glad you are OK. The car can always be fixed or replaced. Great you came clean with your dad. In a few years, that story will be shared over a drink and everyone will smile. We all did stuff like that at some point in our lives. Also, great lesson learned in driving "old school" cars, they do not have traction control, ABS, active handling, rack and pinion steering etc. So, next time handle with care. Jerry

You're more than lucky!
My Dad NEVER let me drive any of his cars (not even to the Sr prom, I had to double date).

You are lucky, and it seems, now very wise. Live and learn. 35 years ago, my best friend and I were in the '67 GTO he just bought that day. On our way to the store, he 'goosed it' around a corner. The car had positraction, whipped back and forth, a little worse each time, and we ended up going through a fence and into a large tree in someones backyard. Had to pay for the fence, damage to the tree, and he needed a whole new front clip. Luckily, we went down to Dorris Auto Wreckers, and they had a complete '67 GTO front clip in his paint color (Cameo Ivory) for $100. But the pinstripe never matched, and the AC had to be repaired at considerable cost. Lesson learned. That was the last car he wrecked.

I have a mail-box NOS cheap.

Years ago (1980) I had a 1970 Corvette, picked up my girlfriend and headed down the street, made a left and gassed it. Spun once in the middle of the street. Scared the sh*t out of me. All was well after my heart stopped pounding.

You are very lucky-stay safe!

None of you old C2 or C3 owners have mention what I've always heard about rear suspension, curves and problem with it. If its true or not I've always respected it when driving into curves as it seems its caused a lot of wrecks.

Also how old and dried out were the rear tires. 2008 rebuilt, were tires replaced and even it they were, unless changed out in last few years they are 6 years old, maybe older based on Mfg Date.

Plus the poster is 40 years old so he's not wet behind the ears....LOL

Blame it on the mailbox..........I have had one of those damn things "leap out" and damage my 66 Vette as well (of course shifting into 2nd "hard" on a rain slicked road might of had something to do with it). I wasn't so lucky. Door had to be replaced, and a brand new AR TTD wheel was replaced free from the dealer, due to a broken spoke - oh, did I not mention the ditch I went through sideways after hitting the mailbox?

Congrats on learning a hard lesson with minimal damage.

Is it ever really "just a mirror" ?
Never been that way for me.
I have lost control and damaged or wrecked the car
or lost control and got lucky and hit nothing.
You are lucky.

I already bought the mirror from Wilcox. I blamed it on slick roads, the tires are from about 2008, the crazy and scary thing, the previous tires that we still have on the old rims that we pulled off in 2008, were from 1975, now those tires were real loose. These tires still look new. Strike it up to my dumba##. And now power steering, trying to turn, I think it is about a 32" steering wheel. It is all good now. Was going to bring the car to work today, but it was raining.

I don't think his dad "LET" him drive it, as dad was out of town.
