Default Front hub wooble

1964 convertible. I'm doing a frame off resto and after installing the front drums I notice there's play in the spindle in all directions. I tightened the castle nut to the closest pin opening so the hub moves freely. The next turn removes the play but the hub is too tight in my opinion. The bearings are new and the hub did not look worn. Could it be that I didn't pack them with enough grease or might there be another issue I don't see?

I would remove the hub and mic the diameter where the inner bearing rides, after all these years a inner bearing may have spun on the spindle causing wear where the bearing rides. That reveals itself as wobble, and I think a good machine shop can repair.

Are the drums and bearings the same ones that you took off? When you put them back on, did you follow the bearing preload procedure in the service manual too the letter? Dennis

I've been reluctant to post my fix because I feel like an idiot but here goes. The front bearings were installed backwards. Don't ask how that happened. I guess I was in a hurry and didn't think. I popped them out and replaced them because there were trashed just from rolling the car on and off the trailer. Anyway all's good now. Hopefully, someone dumber than me will read this one day and be helped by it. Thanks to those who tried to help, it's always appreciated.

Hey, things like that can happen (we're all human) and if that's the only dumb thing you do after doing a frame off consider yourself fortunate.
