Default 283 conversion to a 327

What are the differences bewteen a 283 and a 327. would it be possible to make that conversion? Or would I be better off just to to buy an 327 engine outright.

Thanks,
Hugh

I'm not totally sure I understand your question.
Are you wanting to bore-stroke your 283 to 327, OR, are you wanting to REPLACE the 283 with a 327?

If you are wanting to bore/stroke the 283 to 327 (requires boring the 283 to 4in) and stroke it to 327 (requires 3.25 stroke crank), then it CAN be done, but NOT the best idea.
When boring a 283 (3.875 bore) to 4in, the cylinder walls will be rather thin (SOME 283 blocks may not accept a .125 over bore). Also, SOME 283 blocks may not have enough bottom end clearance for the counter weights of a 327 (or 307) crank.
In the long run, it would be more feasible to just replace the 283 with a 327-------------------but if you're going to do that, replace it with a 350----------------EVERYTHING is a direct bolt-in swap.

Is your car a '59 ? I ask because I have a running "59 283" [ different year heads] to remove and replace with a larger engine.

It's a an old '85 3/4 ton truck , but it will get a 400 or a 454. Just not enough engine for a working 3/4T ! Haven't pulled it yet.

I'd send a pic but just switched to a laptop from a desktop and don't have it all figured-out yet. I ran the #'s and was very surprised to say the least !
