Default '63 Camber rod bracket: Bolt torque

I'm finding conflicting information regarding the torque for the bolts which secure the camber rod bracket to the differential. I'd be grateful to anyone who can check their own reference material and let me know what it recommends.

Specifically, the '63 shop manual, in two places, recommends a torque of 15 - 22 ft-lbs. The AIM recommends 40 - 50 ft-lbs, quite a bit different!

The bolts themselves are 3/8", grade 8. For grade 8 bolts, the shop manual torque makes zip-point-zero sense. It's not much more than finger tight. (OK, not my arthritic fingers..... but you get the idea).

On line charts are in pretty good agreement with the recommended torques in the AIM. See:

bolt torque chart

I'm inclined to go with published specs for grade 8 bolts unless there is a compelling reason not to.... such as the iron differential case is really, really soft and 22 ft-lbs is all it will take.

So, bottom line, what does other Corvette reference material say about this?

Thanks in advance,

Jim

Jim -

The '65-'66-'67 A.I.M.'s all show 40-50 ft-lbs. for those four bolts.

Thank you, John! (You are right on top of CF today, aren't you?) The shop manual torque just seems silly.... like maybe at the time the manual was written the bolts were spec-ed to be 5/16, grade 5 but changed by the time production started.

In any event, 40 - 50 it is, then.

Nice catch. I used the 63 shop manual value of 15-22. I just checked the AIM and I'd better up the torque! Thanks!
Brgds,
Rene
BTW; Chiltons 63-82 says 15-22; Chiltons 63-76 says 15-22; Clymer 63-76, says bracket to carrier 35.

Interestingly, the AMA Manuals that were made available this week via the Forum, also say 15-22 lb.ft.

OK, found it. That's one of the shop manual pages with the erroneous torque value.
