57 vette 283 oil stick length and oil amount
Hello all,
Question: recently rebuilt my 283 and filled with 4 quarts of oil and filled filter 3/4. Started engine, ran couple of minutes and oil check indicated one quart low. I made one change with rebuild by using new oil stick and tube that fits in block for stick. By its measurement, it would take six quarts to fill mark. I measured the new stick at 19 1/4 length vs old stick at 18 1/4 inch. The new tube measures 6 1/4 from block to top. Need to replace stick and tube to get correct oil level but not sure of length for stick and tube. Five quarts of oil with new filter,,,,correct....and not six? Confused...please help!! thanks

Dave:
Since no one replied as yet, I'll take a stab at it. My '57 dipstick measures 19.5 inches from the end to the "stop cap". The tube measures 6 inches. You are correct. It should take 5 quarts with the filter.
My dip stick is a repro from Corvette Central. I remember I had to cut the tube a bit to get the correct 5 quart measurement to the full mark.

Abdo, I hope we can get together sometime!
Dave, I'm pretty sure my tube and dipstick are original in my mid-run '57. The tube is 8 3/4" total. The portion that slides into the block is 3/4", so there's 8 inches of tube exposed. The dipstick is 21 3/4" to where the stop is below the handle.
