Where can I buy a thermostat?
Trying to find a Robertshaw #330-180 balanced flow thermostat 180 rating won't fail closed. No part store around here seems to carry them.
Thanks

Robert Shaw is no longer selling them in stores, but Mr. Gasket may be available:

Write-up says "balanced".
Summit also sells Robert Shaw from Flow Kooler:

If you compare the construction of the Mr. Gasket to the Robert Shaw, they look identical.

I had a Mr gasket/RS T stat fail closed.
The wax leaked out of the wax motor,a nd it wouldn't open.
The fail open bullsh!t is just that, BS.
What "fail open" means, is if your car gets too hot, and the t-stat opens way past normal which will probably damage the wax motor, it latches in an open position.
It can't open to latch if the wax leaks out first.

I've never had a thermostat fail shut. I've had 2-3 over many years that wouldn't close all the way. Never owned a Robert Shaw. Just the cheap ones.

I had a Stant fail closed (one of the stamped arms broke off, preventing it from "opening"). It prompted me to try the Robert Shaws.
I have had a Mr. Gasket (Robert Shaw) that was off a "few" degrees too high. I replaced it with another Mr. Gasket, and it never failed.
The other older (original) Robert Shaws all worked fine. But then again so did "most" of the Stants.

Has anyone eve wondered why the OEM's didn't adopt the RS design? Especially since the are the one that had to warranty the engine in case the thermostat failed CLOSED and the engine overheated?

For a short while, I ran one of those "balanced flow" t-stats in the stooopidly expensive engine in my vintage racer (see avatar). The t-stat would remain closed until the engine reached a truly terrifying temperature at which point it would pop open, letting the coolant temp immediately drop back to normal.
When I couldn't stand the thermal drama any longer, I threw the balanced flow POS away and installed a garden variety NAPA t-stat. Never had another problem. Temperature would rise steadily to the operating point and then remain there.
No more balanced flow whiz-bang gadgets for me.

We had a 2001 GMC Denali 6.0L and the thermostat started sticking closed at 59,000 miles. The first time I tapped the housing and it popped open, the next time I put a new one in and it never happened again.
Gates Rubber bought STANT by the way. They sell these now in Gates brand and Stant brand. Same piece in both boxes I was told by the Gates Rep.

lota drama these days over t-stats -- just had a similar quesiton over on the jeep forums.
I'm all for new tech, but for a tstat, what's wrong with stock? if you're really worried, worst case, just keep stick on gasket in whatever tool set you keep in your car, if the t-stat fails closed, pull over, let everything cool down, and just pull out the tstat.
