Chasing Odd Vibration - Half Shaft question
Since getting my '66 L79 back from restoration I've been chasing down an odd vibration that seems to be in the drive train somewhere.
Tires have been replaced and balanced with no effect on the vibration.
I've read the FAQ's on vibration analysis, and those tests have been inconclusive. The odd thing is that it's not a cyclic vibration. There is a slight cyclic that can be felt in the steering wheel around 60 mph, but there is a bunch of other continuous vibration that becomes noticeable above about 30 mph and increases with speed but does not seem to have a regular "beat" to it.
So, the other day I was under the car and noticed that the half shaft universals on both sides were showing lubricant leakage and the shocks were sprayed with the same stuff. This leakage is from both the inboard and outboard universals.
There are less than 500 miles on this chassis since complete rebuild. The drive shaft and half shafts are original but the universals are new.
So, finally getting to my question, is it normal for new universals to sling grease out of the bearing areas?

If all of this started with the installation of the new U-joints then something most likely went wrong on the installation.
Grease should not be flying out.
Here's an article I wrote about driveshafts and U-Joints. It might help.

I had a similar vibration and did
all that you mentioned. I believe
it was in half shaft or a universal
joint in half shaft setup
My guy balanced all shafts and founds universal he did not like.
solved my vibration problem. I had it at about 45 mph. to 60 mph. I wish u well
you will feel great when u get rid of the
vibration
