Default 1963 coupe windshield wiper malfunction

Hello Everyone,

I have a 1963 coupe and my windshield wipers are malfunctioning.

I'll do my best to describe the problem.

When I turn on the wipers they work fine for a little bit and then they slow down and eventually stop. If I turn the car off and wait around 3min. They will return to their resting position and if I turn them back on they work again for a little bit a then the same thing happens. They slow down and eventually stop(not at their resting position). Any help with this issue is greatly appreciated.

Sounds like it's time to rebuild the wiper motor (or just open it up and remove the caked-on dried grease, clean and lubricate it).

Sounds about right....the old lube is turning into clay like mush and the wiper motor can't fight through it after a time running. You can bust it open yourself and take a crack at it but if you decide to send it off make damn sure the restorer knows you want YOUR particular wiper motor back. Original '63 parts are a PITA to find (and afford)!

That's my fear with any part you send out. How do you know who to trust these days? How do you know what you send out is what you're getting back?

If you record the GM part number and date code (if it has one) for a part and/or etch it with one of those tools in an unobtrusive place it might give you peace of mind. Most of the top restorers are great about such things though; their livelihood and business depend on their reputation in a relatively small community.

When I sent my '63 horns out for restoration; the vendor asked me twice if I wanted to sell them. Made me nervous enough to check everything when I got the back. All was well.

BTW - Steve Hackel is the windshield washer motor guy.

Wipers on my 63 stopped working and the caked on grease was cleaned out and now they work fine.

What did you find?
As posted earlier Steve Hackel is a good restorer and I think another respected restorer is Steve Hack(not sure if the last name is spelled correctly).

Yes - Steve Hack and Steve Hackel are both electric motor guru's (Steve Hack also does full body-off restorations).
