Corvette Vs 2015 Mercedes Twin Turbo
Being a C2 Owner I am using that license to share my son's C5 story.
My son has a 1999 Lingenfelter C5 Twin Turbo Corvette in Germany while stationed there for the Army. He flies the Apache for the Army.
He is now being transferred to Alaska but on his last run on the Autobahn before packing up the Vette for shipment he was going along running 110 to 120 MPH on the Autobahn.
A Mercedes S class Twin Turbo brand new car pulled up to him and started encouraging him to race.
The Mercedes boasts 600+ Horsepower the driver wanted to teach the kid a lesson with is $150,000 + Mercedes.
First run, they punched off and my son pulled about 2 bus lengths on the Mercedes before letting off. Germans can be hard headed. The guy pulled up again and wanted to race. Same result.
The guy came back a third time and my son blew him away again.
Bus lengths lead no competition at all.
The Mercedes owner was pissed. Probably went straight back to the dealership complaining his car is not running right.
I should mention my son's Vette has twin turbo's and was originally rated at 650 HP at the crank, his last dyno showed 638 HP at the rear tire and that was before he really started to understand the turbo tune and added larger injectors and a stronger fuel pump and more sensitive o2 sensors.
Now it is over 700 at the tire approaching 900 at the crank and will still pull nearly 30 mpg on the highway at 70 MPH. His max boost is up to 20 lbs and he has zero detonation recorded so his tune skills have improved. It is a 1999 C5 and is all the way up to 32,000 total miles on it now.
He still says I am silly for not adding a Turbo to my C2 but I don't need the turbo to be happy.
This happened a couple weeks ago but I thought it might make a few of you smile. A silly American out spanking Germans on their home turf. His has a strong rumble to the exhaust and he says everywhere he goes people smile, clap and cheer him on. Several tried to buy it.
He says in 3 years driving the Autobahn this was the only time someone tried to race him. ( Nothing against Germany or Germans, I was there in January and they are very industrious, prosperous people, I enjoyed the trip and the people )

Always fun to spank a snob in an expensive car. All the more fun to do it right in Europe.

On a Mercedes forum somewhere, a twin turbo s class owner is bragging that he had to teach some kid driving a Corvette on the autobahn a lesson on why German engineering is superior to American engineering...

To be fair the Mercedes with over 600 HP was probably 2000 pounds heavier and at least 200 HP short of the Vette. No where close to a fair race but he probably had an 8 speed automatic vs a 6 speed manual at 100+ mph the auto should have had an opportunity to let a quick downshift get him ahead but it did not happen. He had his doors blown off.
This Vette is a little unique, in 1999 Car and Driver tested it in Germany and it ran 226 MPH. I don't think the Mercedes had any chance at all.

Here's another very famous and brutally fast one!

So....a 150,000 Mercedes got beat by your Son's hopped up C5?
Okay. It's still a C5.
And I had one too. An FRC with tons of mods. And I still got spanked by a 996 TT with "upgraded" turbos that pulled him through 205 mph. All I saw were taillights at my "humble" 191 mph. I told Lou at LG Motorsports "Its still too slow!!" Hahaha
Regardless.....I have an appreciation for all cars. And there is always something faster. Always.
But it is nice to win the race for American muscle.
Not such the same outcome for a 650 HP WS6 at Race Wars vs a VW Polo. The Polo put the SMACK DOWN on the WS6 and ran a 10.4 vs the WS6's 11.2.
Just saying.
