Default Why isn't the Ram Jet 350 more popular?

I've been on the forum a few months and I don't see anything about the Ram Jet 350. I would have thought it would be perfect in an early C2.

Funny you should ask this question. My wife and I drove our '62 up to Carlisle this year. We have had a RamJet 350 in the car for over 13 years and 42,000 miles. We were parked on the fun field and a guy from Canada was asking me about the RamJet. He said he was considering using the RamJet injection system, but had read about the "cruise control" problem with these engines. I told him that I was probably the person who has posted most of the information concerning this particular problem.
Here is a link to my experience:
www.carols62.com/ramjet

It has been a good reliable engine, but initially it ran very, very rich. I have since corrected the richness problem by using tuning software. On our last trip to Carlisle and back (about 1000 miles total) we averaged close to 30mpg.

My experience is that you should expect absolutely no assistance from GM or any Chevy dealer if you have problems with this engine.

I've had a 350 ramjet for 10 years in a 72 camaro. Been a fun engine to play with!

I dumped the Carb Thang and went MSD Atomic EFI ... Best think I did to the car in 40 years. The 502 runs like a Modern car with a Palm Programer that lets me change any parameter at the push of the mouse button.

Gheeeeeeeeeez I Love that Thing.. Thank You MSD.

I have thought it might be the ticket for my LATE C2. What I can't figure out is whether or not it will fit under a stock C2 small-block hood. It seems like such an obvious choice that I would think the answer to the fit question would be easy to find, but I haven't found it yet.

Makes sense.... Only thing I can think of if it's a 65 -66 would be to buy a BB hood. Or a Stinger BB hood if a 67

I have friends with a 63 Coupe and the previous owner, a friend of theirs, added the Chevy crate motor I believe you're talking about.
Been a while since I saw this Vette up close but don't remember any problems with hood clearance.

One concern is that the engine is designed for 92 octane, and 91 is all you're going to get in Calif.

Louie - Just looked it up and besides seeing the hydraulic roller cam has pretty tame specs, the compression is only listed as 9 to 1 and the folks that have that Silver 63 I posted the pic of, live here in Arizona and we only have 91 too, at least in our general area.

I put the 350 Ram Jet cam #14097395 in my '94 LT1 Z28. I figured the LT1 head flow is very close and the intake manifolding is similar to. The price for the cam is hard to beat and i didnt even need to change vlv springs for the modest lift. My LT1 had greater compression at 10.4:1 so that cam should make more pwr than the 350hp & 400ft-lbs in the crate motor. Well the car loves to burn rubber now and i really cant get it to hook even with my drag radials at 18psi. But it stops breathing just past 5000rpm and now i cant seem to program my 4L60E to shift below 6000rpm costing me a lot of time in the 1/4 mi.

I think the Ram Jet 350 is a great idea and for the price it makes chevy a lot of money using thier cheap iron vortec heads and hyper psitons. Last i looked that crate combo was nearly $6k. The Ram Jet EFI system itself is under $2K and an option for any engine using the vortec head intake bolt pattern. I think the 350 "Fast Burn" heads use that pattern and will support some big hp even on just 350 cubes. Only speed bump maybe the throttle body is in the front which certainly doesnt match any cowl induction hoods and really no stock C1-C2 hoods - to get fresh cooler air u need to add some plumbing.

But it does look like early mechanical fuel injection doesnt it.
