what is a '56 Corvette Powerglide?
I'm new here on the forum. I'm restoring a 1956 Corvette and need a Powerglide. An original Corvette Powerglide is very expensive. Thought I might put one together from Chevy parts. Best I can figure from online sources, the Corvette Powerglide was air-cooled (like for a 6 cylinder?), but the main case and torque converter housings have part numbers like for a liquid-cooled V-8. So the question is, what was the Corvette Powerglide like? I got an original tail shaft housing for the bolt on shifter so that's not an issue. Thanks.

converter housing and main case are the same for a corvette and passenger car. a trans taken from a 55 is starting at $20 with no reserve on ebay.

Thanks very much, and for the eBay tip. Do you know if the insides of the Corvette air-cooled Powerglide were like the insides of the passenger car fluid-cooled transmission? How did they air cool it? I don't know anything about Powerglides!!!!

internals are the same. corvette just eliminated the trans cooler lines. the one item that will be needed is the shift linkage with the eye hole for the neutral safety rod.

The 56 Powerglide is a cast iron unit and is very heavy.
If you are building a driver car I would use a aluminum PG or a Turbo 350 trans. Or for better performance use a 700R4 or a 2004R overdrive transmission.
