To un stick it, you need to reach under the car and manually put both shift arms in the neutral position. You will feel a distinct click as you push the arms all the way forward or backward. Neutral is in between.

Is it a stock shifter or a Hurst? I think a stock shifter does use a bar alignment tool rather than a gage pin - but once under the car you can measure the notch in the shifter housing to fab an alignment tool to fit it.

I made my own alignment tool out of a Church Key...

My factory shifter used to lock up in first and reverse at the same time. As was suggested, I reached down and moved both arms to neutral. If that does not work (and I would try again because everything will be a PIA), I would try to remove the lock pins from the end if the rods and release the connector rods. You will probably need to get under the car (take the time to secure the car on jack stands). Also, I would put a tarp or blanket(s) under the car to catch the lock pins that may fly off in the process.

Like Ruby Red, mine (a Muncie) would stick in first and reverse. Getting it free is as described above. But to fix mine, I found that the holes in the shift levers on the trans were bably worn into ovals. The remedy is to replace the levers or bubba-it like I did and weld up the holes and re drill.

The arms need to be pointing straight up...so hit them at the top to move them in the direction needed...
Also check the reverse arm, it might be the one that is 'locking' you up..
It should be in the forward position to be out of gear....

Hey,
this was a trick played on your worst enemy. It's the reverse lever that is doing the lock up. Somehow your linkage adjustment allowed the trans to be in a forward gear and reverse. The fix is simple, just move the reverse lever back to neutral and your OK. Then take the slop out of your linkage.
When I install a trans I do that to lock the input shaft so I can rotate the trans a bit to enter the pressure plate splines.
The trick only takes a second, you lay on your back and grab the reverse lever and simply move it, the shifter can't stop that.

This whole procedure takes 12 seconds and your back on the road.
