Just bought a '57 Chev, 2-door, 4-Speed. Seller says the engine is a 283 (not original, no road draft outlet). I know it's a replacement block but what would be the codes. On the pad it only is stamped T-101

Start with getting the block casting number and block casting date. Probably on the upper rear of the block, driver's side (casting number) and passenger's side (casting date).

Also check for any codes or numbers on the sides of the block.
