Default Oil filter efficacy

I was doing some googling to find the best oil filter possible for my new engine when I came across this site that rates a whole ton of different oil filters. I thought this was very cool and worth sharing. You can skip directly to the results table here.

The one bummer is that he didn't include Moroso filters in the tests.

Interesting, but this study/test is 5 yrs old. I'm sure if they ran it again today, the results would be different as companies are always trying to improve their products to stay competitive

If your oil filter is the original PF141 metal canister, probably the best filter element is the NAPA Gold #1143 made by WIX in the USA. Also sold separately under the WIX Part Number. No need to look further.

The Baldwin Filter equivalent (P18-HD) is also first rate.

How do K & N oil filters compare? They made their reputation on air filters. Any experiences good or bad from you guys? Worth the extra cost?

Never had a problem with 'em on the SBC stroker in my Suburban.

I have a new crate engine with a Dart block. I'm looking at the screw-on's with filter power between 20-35 microns. I think I've settled on the Moroso 22460. I'm also running VR1 30w race oil.

Between the special oil, special filter, 8qt tank, and needing to be done every 2k miles... Oil changes are a little more painful than normal. That said, having 500hp+ under my right foot helps console that pain.

Looks like the K&N did pretty good (in the top-5), but the issue I have with them is that they filter particles down to 10 microns. That sounds good, but I've read that filters which filter at that level also restrict the oil flow at higher rpms. In my case, the engine builder of my 406 stroker suggests a particle filtering range of 20-35 microns; combined with VR1 and more frequent changes.

Wix and Baldwin are the only filters I will ever use.

Wow. Wix takes a hit there! OTOH Mobil 1 looks good across the board, anyone know who makes their filters?

I still feel that they (WIX) are more than adequate for our cars. The main thing is to use a good oil with ZDDP additives, a good/decent oil filter, and change oil regularly.

These cars did 50-100,000 miles with much lower quality oils and similar filters......under much more demanding conditions than most of our cars ever see anymore.

I get 250-300,000 miles between engine rebuilds or replacements. With synthetic oil, I figure on changing at 10,000 miles or one year. My SBCs all have hydraulic lifters, so I never worry about ZDDP.

Can't argue with success - but, flat tappet hydraulic lifter cams need ZDDP as much as flat tappet solid lifter cams. It's possible you meant hydraulic roller lifters.
