Frame off or Body off? A better term.

For what I do to each of my cars, I use the term "body off restoration" but a more accurate description would be - 100% dis-assembly, restoration of every piece and re-assembly. Regardless of the terms used by others, a simple inspection of the car will show what was actually done.

I had to Google the definition of "meh". Is that some of this new social media texting crap?

the OP asked a linguistic question, and we ended up debating another one.
Once in a while seems like a hobby of some on the forum (a tiny minority though) to question the question (which is easy) , rather than the answer it (usually more difficult)
It makes the OP feel bad, those who mean well too, and it puts a bad taste to the thread....
Now an attempt to answer the OP: when people ask I usually say I took the car apart to the last nut&bolt and redid the bodywork and birdcage, which in my case is pretty much what I did. So , "body off" does not mean that one has restored the birdcage or not, nor does "nuts&bolts", nor to what extend mechanical parts have been replaced/checked. I see 'body-off' used a lot in ads, because it impresses the unsophisticated buyer. Would not impress me

Note-
I can't believe the number of people who are so thin-skinned that fun and games on the internet by people who don't know them and who they don't know hurts their tender feelings so much. Is this another example of the "safe place", you make me feel uncomfortable, and micro-aggression phenomenon? For God's sake people, get a grip. This is not life and death we are discussing here.

I had to look it up as well.
POOP ON YOU is more then micro-aggression and I don't spend time here to have someone basically say sh#t on you!
I've settled down a bit and realize it's only a few that say things they wouldn't if they were face to face.
Yes, I like places where I am comfortable and feel safe.
I don't look for aggression, but will react to it. I never have posted a lot and it will probably be less.

I interpreted this as his Hillary Clinton impression, but I might be mistaken.
I have always thought that the "frame off" phrase never made logical sense, but it is so entrenched that it will never change. Doesn't bother me as much as seeing people write "bumber" or "truck mat".

The MEH's are micro-aggression and my thin skin could handle that.

Either way, how much does that say?
We hear “frame off” and know it is actually “body off”.
Either term does not define what was actually performed.
If I do a “body off” and use the old rusted gas tank????
I propose a term that defines what you have done with a full restoration.
I prefer to call mine a “nut and bolt” restoration.
A "nut and bolt" restoration would indicate that the car was
dismantled and rebuilt with EVERY part being a new or like new.
You could then define that it was with NCRS standards or not.
A “NUT AND BOLT” restoration would simply mean that it was built
with every single part being a good original, NOS or a good reproduction.
It is more definitive then “frame off”.

You either did "body on" or "body off" restorations. Of course, "body off" means it came off the frame, so it wasn't long until someone in a bit of brain block used "frame off" instead of "body off" and it got repeated.
The implication long ago was a "body off" restoration was better than "body on" restoration as you could get to everything. Of course, it is "COULD" it doesn't mean you did. This is kind of like "full restoration" vs. "partial restoration". If I wash it, is that a partial restoration?
Heck, you will find if in long enough you will hear terms of all sorts twisted around. The most common besides this is "double hump" heads and "camel hump" heads. Well, they were double hump long before someone twisted it to camel hump.
I've even heard non-car people trying to impress people with "split T roof" and "splitty window" when meaning a t-top or a split window coupe.
