Do all of you guys run ethanol free gas in your vettes? Is that pretty much a standard? I have a friend who owns literally 15 classics and he says he just puts in chevron and never has any problems. Who knows? I don't trust or like ethanol so I'm gonna stay away from it.

No, a fuel system in good condition shouldn't care whether the fuel is E10 or straight gasoline. I'd have that crud in the fuel filter analyzed to find out what it is, and do whatever is necessary to get rid of the source.

Agree with JohnZ that it looks like tank sealer. You mentioned in another post that there is no filter on the sending unit. If you put a filter there and the crud stops building up in the bowl filter after a bit then you have sealer in the tank.

Nothing to do with the crud but you might want to take a pump pump pressure reading. These carbs don't like any more than 4.5 - 5lbs pressure

That's probably why the sock was removed. It plugged up and stopped the engine.

Here is my '61 filter -- shallower and no spring...
As others have stated - decrud the fuel tank.

Raise the soft top, remove the tank cover in the top well...pull off the sending unit and look down in the tank with a strong light -- all will be revealed. Its tank sealer or even more ominous, some @hole put something in your tank via the gas cap - it happens. Looks like you were due for a carb cleanup/rekit anyway from the photos.

IMO - the car is unsafe to drive...jam up one of those needle valves with this gunk and have gas spilling on that hot aluminum manifold - and, well, carbeque...

I agree, ethanol is the least of your worries. Something is likey wrong in that tank. Get that fixed first. Then worry about what ifs with the fuel.
