Default 250hp or 300ph

Is there a way to tell a base motor (250hp) vs the one step up (300hp) besides the sticker on a 1965?

The 250hp engine has a Carter WCFB, the 300 has a Carter AFB. Dead giveaway.

Biggest "25 foot away" clue on a correct car is NO external
"tomato-juice-can" fuel filter on the 250hp car.

My black book says the stamp pad will have engine suffix he or ho for 250 manual/automatic and hf hp respectively for 300 hp

There are likewise 4 different carb numbers when new.

Yes............engine pad stamp, carb, and intake manifold are a few differences for original engines.

The '65 250 hp engine got the double hump heads instead of prior year pyramid heads and retained the WCFB carburetor and the 2" exhaust.

The 300 got the AFB and the 2 1/2" exhaust. I think the distributor was different between the two engines. Not sure.

250 hp engines didn't get a hp sticker on the valve cover.

NCRS Judging Manual says distributor is the same for 1965. FWIW.

Out of curiosity, does the base timing set differently between the two?

Never mind, I found it. They're the same.

Except the automatic transmission cars got 2" exhausts. At least in 65 for sure, don't know about other years. And I don't know why.

I've heard the larger pipe won't clear the PG. Don't know if that is true or not.

' 65 250 &300 hp engines have the same long block (including heads).
Differences as mentioned are engine stamp pad numbers, carb (WCFB vs. AFB), Intake manifold, and exhaust manifold and exhaust (2 inch vs. 2.5 inch).......apparently with the exception of the 300hp powerglide exhaust.

My 65 powerglide 250hp has 250 hp stickers on the valve covers.

As MikeM mentioned, no 63-65 250 HP engine in a Corvette ever originally received a 250 HP sticker on the valve cover.

I know all the reproduction books list a 250 HP sticker but they're not correct.

Thanks for confirming what MikeM said about no 250hp sticker on 63-65 Corvettes. Do you know if GM put a 250 hp sticker on any engine? Perhaps the 62 250hp?

Thanks, Doug

I'll start a new discussion about the 250 HP decal for 63, 64 and 65 because I think most believe there is supposed to be one.

Watch this......
