Default Car Show - Ephemera: What do you display?

Hey Guys

For those of you that take your car to shows... especially the smaller venues, what do you display along with your car?

The shows I have been to here in Germany are unlike the shows I have been to in the states. Hoods down, owners away from their cars... not very talkative.

When I go, first thing I do is put my hood up (GERMANS LOVE TO SEE ENGINES!) - it draws them like flies and C2s are already pretty rare.

My car was ordered/delivered to Indian River Cheverolet in Florida... not far from Cape Canaveral

So I have a 67 Florida Shell Gas Station map of Florida I have on the dash, a February 67 Playboy on the passenger seat. I keep a 67 Kennedy half dollar in my ash tray.

Any other suggestions? I was thinking about a Coca Cola old school metal ice box with bottled sodas in it.

What do you guys do?

I made a board that matches the color of my car. I mounted the TF ribbons, BG certificate, etc (I'm not bragging, I'm being honest). I have a cooler that I customized with NCRS and Corvette patches (hot glue is fantastic). I bought an easel to display the display board. I have a vintage Chevy number one team bag, I display my 67 Dealer album, the mags the car has been in, an original "OK" used car tag on rear view mirror. I got bath mats that match my car and put them outside of each door. I love crap like that...People go crazy. I do more too, but I think if I go on about someone will lock me up in the looney bin...LOL...ARA

I got one of those phony (just for shows) dealership window stickers listing all the options, their cost, and price of the car in '66. I bought it laminated and display it under one of the wiper blades. People love it and have seen them take almost as many pics of that sticker as they have of the car!

I'll need to order a new one now. The old one lists "tuxedo black" and the car is being painted back to the original Laguna blue.

I got one of those window stickers too! I had it in my window, and a American who was vacationing in Germany saw the car, came buy, and HAD to comment on the price/sticker.

You know what they always say when they see these window stickers... "$4,522.37??? I'll give you that for it right now... ha ha ha!"

I told him, "listen, if you give me $4500 CASH right NOW you can have the car. No checks, no credit cards, $4500 US Dollars. Of course, MOST people don't carry that kind of cash on em' especially in Germany (He may have had Euros, but not Dollars). He said, well, I'd have to go to the bank...
"NO deal, then", I said, "Has to be US Dollars right now." I followed up with, "Now you can tell all your friends back in the States that you could have bought a 67 Corvette Convertible if you had had $4500 on you".

I had a display sign made up to place on a tripod beside my 1962 - it lists options and gives a brief run-down about the car, saves a lot of repeat questions. I also have a replica factory sticker laminated and affixed to the inside of the driver's side window, right where it would have been from the factory . . . and as others have said, it gets a LOT of comments. Other than that, hood open, and I try to stay with the car as much as possible. You meet some really great people that way. I don't display the numerous trophies and awards the car has won as a rule. They're nice, and I appreciate them - but that's not why I have the car.

I think simple is the best way. I have a nice, small custom sign with the relevant info for people who are interested, without a ton of writing making it too busy. It has a photo at the bottom that shows the original paperwork I got with the car, without my having to risk bringing it with me. Inside, I have a repro Owners Manual (in case it walks away) and a repro but aged window sticker, which draws an amazing amount of comments and questions.

Years ago and on the verge of divorce, I saw a plastic sign at the Woodward Dream Cruise that had the following: MY WIFE SAID IF I BOUGHT THIS CAR SHE WOULD LEAVE ME, SOMETIMES I KINDA MISS HER.
The marriage survived and when I leave it on the seat at cruise-ins, etc., it gets a lot of chuckles.

Every time I see a cabbage patch doll or similar "working" on the car I want to puke. I'm glad none of you do that. It seems wives take over.

The other thing I hate is fuzzy dice. I don't know how popular they were back in the day but they seem like people are trying to hard someone.

I think a retro window sticker or manual or a storyboard about something particular to the car is tasteful.

I was thinking that, while a lot of Germans, especially the younger ones, speak some English, sometimes "stuff" helps to put it in context.

I can't tell you how many guys asked to look at the Feb 67 Playboy on the passenger seat!

I also have a few Montgomery Ward, Sears, and JC Pennys catalogs from the era. They are certainly a blast to look through but are kinda large and unwieldy for a show.

I used to go overboard with the big "look at me" sign, all the GM manuals on the passenger seat and sometimes (Lord have mercy) a small model car of my BIG car on the air cleaner.

Then I hit puberty and now I only have the fake (but accurate) window sticker...

I have a big thick picture album showing how I built the car. I open it and place it on a fender (with a fender cover under it). If someone starts leafing through the album, I will usually go talk to him (or her). If they are just looking at the car then I usually stay seated and let them come to me if they have a question.

I have mounted on individual poster sized, and framed, displays of the hundreds of dash plaques I've accumulated over the years. For a couple of shows, I had them on display around the front of the car and people really like to look them over, to see where all the car had been, over the years. However, it got to be too much trouble to keep doing it so I gave it up. But, the spectators did seem to enjoy them.

Ahhhh Frank. Danger, danger Will Robinson. She has her elbow on your hood.

You just don't know where that elbow has been.

I have and show every accessory that GM offered that can be used in my 55 Corvette to make it more pleasure able and work in my 55 from a car shaver to engine heater and dated road flares. People are fascinated to see and realize GM offered them.

I'll need to order a new one now. The old one lists "tuxedo black" and the car is being painted back to the original Laguna blue.

Hey Gary - where do you get the phony dealership window sticker? Is this a document format that one simply fills-in on one's computer? Did you create it? I think that's a great idea to display at a car show. Let us know.
