Default Loose hood hinge?

I just pulled the hood off my '66 for the first time and noticed that the pivot between the upper and lower hinge pieces, is really kinda flip floppy.

Is that normal?

They look to be replacements already...

Not normal. If you look you'll find that special rivet at the pivot point prob has its fingers broken off on the outboard side. You can buy the rivets or, as I did, just replace the whole hinge and save a lot of bother. Long Island has the best repros. Mine were not original either so no great loss.

For 50 year old hinges - Oh, Yea.

Repos will be very tight and some of them won't be "correct" for judging.

I haven't seen very many midyear hinges but the ones I have seen are fairly loose.

I don't see a problem with that as long as the hinge holds the hood from flying off and lets it pivot to the open position.

Were the black from the factory or bare steel?

I wonder if they would be a source of a rattle while driving or give a hood adjustment issue?

63 were non gloss black. My rivet fingers were pretty much gone and I hadn't even noticed it till the NCRS judges brought it up. I only fixed them because I don't like broken parts on my car. You could prob run forever with what you have.

LICS makes a nice-looking repro hinge with markings as original and I installed both of mine in 10 minutes without even removing the hood.
Pretty much a no-brainer.

The hinges were in place when the blackout was sprayed, so, they're the same black as the fenderwells, etc.

The steel hood hinges were supplied zinc-plated, and got varying degrees of primer, body color, and blackout.

Here is how I fixed my floppy hinges. I drilled the holes out to make them round, then made pins so I could have a "quick release" hood. The beauty thing is you can re and re the hood without having to perform an alignment. I believe I made them out of hex so I could change the way the hairpin clips go in.
