Muffler Madness
The 30 year old super turbo's on my 63 have finally had enough. They have the death rattle on deceleration. I was planning to replace them for another set, no need for N11's or restoration quality, but with all the choices I thought it would be good to ask what others run and recommend?
The engine is a 355 that turns to 7000 rpm, cruise speed is 3000 to 4500 (4:11 gears). The pipes are the original 2.5 inch with stock tips, connected to free flowing ported ramshorn manifolds. I like the relative quiet cruise sound of the super turbo's when they were intact, but maybe there are improved designs.
Any recommendations?
What flows good and has a similar quiet cruise sound.

Melting Slicks
I have Dynomax Super Turbo's on my L79. They have good flow numbers, yet they are just loud enough to let you know it's a Corvette coming down the street. You can actually hear the radio, and carry on a conversation. I don't remember the exact flow numbers, but I think they were twice as good as stock mufflers.

Can anyone suggest a car magazine comparison test in the last couple of years that listed dyno gain, flow and decibel numbers?
Otherwise hook up with some local Corvette clubs for rides in cars similar to yours. Your ears and seat of the pants will provide good data!

2 1/2" magnaflows should do a good job for you. It's well worth the extra 50 bucks and some time with a cutting wheel to put in an H pipe just behind the transmission crossmember. Here is a link to a good kit....http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-642025/overview/

Spending the weekend listening to various mufflers I find I am not in tune with the chambered muffler crowd (too loud).
The replacement Super Turbos or the Dynomax VT with the valve to quiet the cruise are the two favorites. The Super Turbos are a known entity, the VT is not.
The question is how the VT sounds with the fiberglass body, and how the VT sounds at 3500 rpm?
With my 4:11 gears the highway cruise is 3500-4500, not the 2000 rpm cruise where the sound tests are typical made. Is the VT valve actually doing something at the higher cruise rpm?
I understand the VT valve is similar to some modern OEM performance mufflers, but I do not know what models factory install these OEM mufflers to get an idea of life and if they work.
Anyone install Dynomax VTs and have an opinion (on a C2 or other later model Corvette)?

We would recommend using some of our oval mufflers. You'll get a deeper exhaust tone, while maintaining an idle and cruise volume that is close to stock. The biggest difference will be noticed once you step on the gas. Heres a pretty good comparison of our mufflers vs the stock ones on a 63:

Is stick with the DM super turbos.....hooker makes a super turbo that works well and is cheap also used them for yrs. Similar to DM but a slightly more metallic sound at idle
Being as you have ramshorns choose the muffler for sound doubt there will be a big performance difference

They fit, were available, flow well, and sound great.
My wife and I could have a conversation on the freeway ride home. I can hear the mechanical sewing machine sound of solid lifters at suburban road speeds. The throttle response is better and the idle has improved. A win.
