Default 66 Cooling

Upgrading from 427/390 to 502/505 am wondering if the stock radiator will provide enough cooling in traffic. I don't understand much about sizing although have an electric fan.

If you're unsure, contact DeWitts, they will direct you in what 'size' you need to cool that monster of and engine...

The stock radiator will not provide enough cooling for a 502, too much heat generated. I have been there could not keep it cool, went with the Dewitt Heavy Duty radiator for 66 and added a puller fan as a backup if stuck in traffic in the summer in Florida. Other items that come into play, fan, number of blades, fan clutch, shroud, thermostat, and AC.

If you don't want to buy a DeWitt radiator, another option is to put a high capacity core in your stock radiator. Check one of your local radiator shops. A recore should fun about $350. There are cores available with five rows of tubes spaced on 3/8 inch centers and 14 fins per inch between the tubes. Stock radiators have 4 rows of tubes on 9/16 centers and 12 fins per inch.

Im sorry about asking this but heat is heat. 180* is 180* no matter what engine it is. how can a proper tuned engine make more heat then anther? by this logic a 283 or 327 should never over heat

Default Aluminum Radiator

Hi Mike,

Here is a good article that should help you out.

My zz502 has a 160 degree thermostat and aluminum radiator and so far I have no over heat problems. I don't do much city driving/stop and go.
