Default Can someone ID this 4-speed?

Looks like a Saginaw to me but it's been a long time. Guy has it for sale locally and only wants $100.

Only 4 speed that I know that has the Reverse in that position is a New Process (as used on Mopars and some GM trucks & vans).

I have the GM version of it in my 62 Vette. It is called a NP440 by GM and was option MY6 (4 speed overdrive).

Interesting. I had a hunch something didn't look quite right about the side cover.

I've never heard of anything like your 62 transmission...just your typical PG, BW, and Muncie transmissions. Does your MY6 use a fourth gear that is geared something less than 1.00:1, with third being 1.00:1?

The bell housing appears to be a 621. If so, and it's all for $100, grab it and the flywheel!

The Saginaw 4-speed was used in most GM low-performance small-block M20 applcations (except Corvette) - there were LOTS of them built in Camaro, Nova, Chevelle, Vega, and similar offerings from Pontiac, Buick, and Olds. Photo below shows a typical freshly-rebuilt Saginaw waiting for installation - note the reverse lever in the same side cover with the 1-2 and 3-4 levers.

Some Saginaws were better than others. It was a replacement for awhile from GM when Muncies were no longer available. I had one in my '62 for awhile and had no problems. Be sure to look at the input shaft. The one with three groves has something like a 3.05 lst, and 2.60+ for second gear. Way too low for most applications. I recently took the one I had for the Vette off the shelf and put it in the '57 Chev I just bought. That one had the 3 groove and with a 3:70 rear you would be in 4th at 30 mph. The one with no grooves (the one I have) has a 2:88 lst and decent ratios after that.

Default New Process 440 ?

I can't see from the pictures where the reverse shift lever enters the tranny . That looks to me that it may be a new process 440 out of an early 80s GM van .

Note that if it is a MY6, there were 2 versions.

1st version used the standard Chevy "Truck" bell housing, with the larger rear rear hole that has to match the transmission front bearing retainer housing (you cannot use a standard passenger car bell housing). One of the 4 trans bolts (that hold the trans into the bell housing) ended up requiring either a stud and nut, or a bolt coming in from the clutch side, and a nut on the rear side (no room to put a bolt in from the rear) due to interferance with the side cover boss & cover).

2nd version "fixed" that bolt interferance issue, and used a special bell housing unique to vehicles that used the 2nd version MY6 trans. It moved that interferring bolt outboard, and that MY6 trans version must come with that unique bell housing!

MY6 has a 3.09 1st, 1.68 2nd, 1:1 3rd, and a .73 4th. Very close gear ratios as a GM 700R4 automatic trans. It is not a very fast shifting trans (like a good Muncie), since the gear ratios are so wide spaced, but is a great cruiser!

It is essentially the same length as a Muncie or T-10, so you can use the same driveshaft. It does require some shimming & spacing of the rear mount, and on a C1, a bracket made for the Z Bar bracket (bracket mounting boss disappears when changing the bell housing), adaption of a shifter (new shifter plate), etc. But it works great for my purposes.

Search under my forum name and MY6 for further info (if interested). I have written several posts concerning that change over.

I run it with 3:55 rear gears.

Well, no answer from the seller. He must have sold it already.

( I DO wish that when people sell something, and someone comes in late to the game and asks about it, they'd give you the courtesy of an answer if it's gone... just takes a second to reply sold!)
