coil for breakerless ignition
I have the breakerless ignition on my 350 crate. Ignition instructions call for a 'stock' coil. I read about varying quality of these things. Any recommendation?

I think most recommend an epoxy filled coil over an oil filled coil due to common vibration and heat deterioration of the oil filled kind. That is particularly an issue with engine mounted coils. Some may be labeled as being for high-vibration environments. Seems I'm constantly reading about MSD failures that would cause me to stay away from them - but then practically everyone seems to be running their stuff so reports of problems are bound to be more numerous as a result.

The beauty of the Breakerless SE device (over Pertronix and others) is that it works with anything, solid core wires, ballast resistor, stock coil - none of that matters.
MSD offers a high-vibration coil if that is your desire though; the MSD 8222...

I found these comments regarding the pros and cons of oil vs. epoxy coils on a 911 Forum...
"The oil filled coil is fine for street cars, I've always heard that the epoxy coils were more for racing or off road use under more vibrations and heat."
"On MSD coils the oil filled tend to leak if you don't mount them upright and not on the engine. The epoxy high vibration blaster coil can be mounted any orientation and on the engine. I don't know if there's been issues with the pertronix coils."
I would suggest that if it doesn't say epoxy, it isn't epoxy. The normal Pertronix coils (II & III) are oil filled, but they do offer an epoxy coil...

MSD offers their High Vibration Blaster Coil which is an epoxy coil...

I think a variable you might be more interested in is the ohm rating of the coil. The lower the ohm rating, generally speaking the higher the voltage output. Pertronix does list their ohm ratings on their website.
Good luck... GUSTO

If you are using the Breakerless SE go to NAPA and buy a IC-12 ignition coil for your engine and enjoy your car.
Stay away from hot rod stuff and restoration parts.

Did you notice where the OP lives ?
He isn't going to "..go to NAPA" for anything...

lectric limited specs coils between 1.2 to 2.1 ohm., and specifically excludes MSD blaster type....The pertronix is fine at 1.5ohm

I believe the MSD 8222 is 0.7 ohm. I put in a large order with Zip today (one of the last ones for closing on my body off rebuild) and ordered just the standard coil (oil I guess).

Since GM chose a red SWC for their national media tribute to Prince...I think mine will be worth another $25K at Mecum this January.
I'm sure others are also happy you're not posting hot tub photos.
