Default loss of power '66 big block

When coming to a stop engine almost dies. Need to give it gas to keep running. Once able to advance engine pulls strong , no hesitation, no stumble . Only happens when coasting to a stop??

Suggestions ??

If you coast in neutral it idles fine but applying the brakes causes it to stall? I'd look at float levels or possibly a sticking float.

What carburetor is on the engine?

I suspected that - have to pull the bowls to check and set the float levels. If the carb has been in use for awhile you may just want to put a rebuild kit in it and blueprint all the settings to factory. I would get a set of the re-useable blue bowl gaskets though - makes subsequent adjustments a little easier.

all the above comments could be true but how about starting with the basics of the ignition system and minor carburetor adjustments. If you have points is the dwell set to 30 degrees. Is the timing set set to 4 degrees BTDC assuming you have a 390 HP engine? Is the idle speed on a warm engine set for 550 RPM at least? Have you tried adjusting the mixture screws for best idle?

All of the above has been checked & set but thanks for the valid points.

I think you are right on this & appreciate the point on the gaskets.

Thanks:
