Default Steering column squeek

A friend asked me about a squeaking steering column when turning the wheel on his 64 vert. He insists he hears it inside. You guys have any idea?

Dan - I have a very small squeak in my '67s steering column when I turn the wheel at slow speeds, such as when parking. I don't hear it at other times so I ignore it.

I've also been told by my wife that she hears a squeak coming from the rear of the car but if I can't hear it, it doesn't exist. As my hearing worsens, I won't notice the steering column squeak either.

Tracking down all the squeaks and rattles in these old cars is like playing whack-a-mole.

Worn or dry upper steering column bearing would be my first guess.

Yessir, upper bearing. You can fix that while the column is still mounted in the car. If you pull the column out you'll find problems that you never expected i.e. worn shaft at the lower bearing, etc.

Check both upper and lower bearings. That squeak may be a worn bearing . I've rebuilt columns that were so worn the lower bearing wore a grove half way through the shaft. If me I would check the column bearings especially if it was never rebuilt .
