Default 62 awakes after 30 year sleep

I bought this car in 1978 as a basket case. A very original numbers matching never hit car that the owner had stripped down to restore. He need cash and sold it to me. I did a 3 year body off restoration. In 1981 I started showing it at Corvette shows concourse class and managed to always bring home a trophy each time. I did that for about 6 years and then family priorities changed, kids in college, houses to be restored. Finally all of that ended last year. So last Nov before we went south for the winter I put Marvel Mystery oil in each cylinder and rotated it a couple of times by hand and repeated. At the beginning of Apr I rebuilt the brakes, a new fuel pump and rebuilt the carb, flushed the anti freeze cleaned the points and added fresh fuel, and new battery, after cranking without spark the oil pressure popped up and it was ready to go. Primed the carb and after a few sputters and coughs it came to life. Took it out side and turned it around and put back on the lift. Still have a lot to do but very happy its alive...

I want to thank all you guys for all the info I have gathered over the 6-8 years that I have been coming to this site. I have been lurking on lots of your threads and saving tons of info which has saved me a lot of time getting this car up and running...

My goal now is to make it a driver to enjoy, I only put 700 miles on it when it was first restore.

Lots more to follow.....

Thanks guys its been a long wait but is great that it is alive and will be back on the road again.

What are you using for engine paint these days, the manifold, t'stat housing and pan need repainting? The block is good and since I don't have to pull the engine this is just going to be a touch up job...

Seymour "Chevy Orange" is a good choice. Welcome to the forum!

Today I learned that the E brake return spring is missing...

The dwell was at 20 vs 30 probably because I sanded the points.. that much??

The vacuum gauge showed a nice steady 20....

My 30 year old timing light doesn't work and skin burns instantly when playing with the induction pick up....

Another great day in the garage...

Ok got the E brake sorted out, new return spring, and both clevis where frozen in place, got them both lubed up so they pull in the direction of the cables. Both cable lock nuts where also frozen and needed persuasion to get free so they could be adjusted.

Changed the clutch bushing... read lots of threads about this, I used a solid bushing since the forces on the rubber ones just seemed too high and the number of times its pushed are a lot so seemed like a good move. While putting the spring back on the wrench slipped off a couple of times nearly taking my fingers off. I added a simple mod to the wrench that made it much safer when you are trying to hold the spring down and put the bolt thru.. works great and at no cost. just a couple of scraps of metal clamped to the moth of the wrench so it cant slip off the bar...

Worked real nice and I still have my fingers.

Got a new timing light and found it was set to 4 degrees, will set it to 8 degrees tomorrow..

That's a great story - thanks for sharing!

Congrats not only on getting it back on the road now, but also on having been able to hang onto it for those long 30 years while dealing with houses, college tuition, etc. That was a major accomplishment in itself. I know - been there, done that!

ALWAYS pull a wrench....never push it. (unless you want busted knuckles). Nice progress. Adjust the dwell back to 30 and set the timing while you're in there....

Thanks... when putting the spring back on I had to push the wrench down to engage the clutch rod, but the far end of the wrench kept hitting the inner fender well and slipping off and almost took off a finger, they do call it a gorilla spring. With this simple fix it went on easy and no fingers were injured during this procedure...

Getting to the timing later this week...

With all the wack-a-doos out there talking on their cell phones and texting, I'm thinking day time running lights would be almost an necessity. Has anyone converted the parking lights to LED and run to the accessory terminal on the fuse block??? Always on, draws almost no power.. seems like a no brainer....

Guess no one has converted parking lights to Day Time Running(DTR) lights. Well I have a set of LED's on order so I will tell you how it works out...

One of the front turn signals wasn't working, it turned out that the springs in the connector had corroded and wasn't making contact. I was able to replace just the black plastic with a new set that included the springs and contacts..

Got the timing/dwell set, it runs nice and smooth now and the rad/t'stat holds it right around 180...

Amazing... since I have all the plug shielding off I turned on the WounderBar to listen for bad plug wires.. but instead music came out from the oldies station it was set to 30 years ago... how great is that!!!

Given all this I took it for a ride around the block, gears are there at least to 3rd, Ebrake needs further adjustment, drivers wheel locks up before the passenger side. All the gauges seem to be working, but one headlight is burnt out...

Slowly coming back to life...
