Default Air Injection Reactor 327/350

What was the purpose of the A.I.R. pump? Did it make the engine perform(run) better?
Thanks

The AIR pump system introduced fresh oxygen into the exhaust chamber to burn off unburned hydrocarbons. The O2 re-ignites the already mostly spent HC's. Some cars still use it today. It does not make the car run better, and, contrary to popular belief, doesn't make it run a lot worse. The up-side is WAY less stink out of your exhaust.

It was probably the quickest thing removed from the new car besides the window sticker. Generally took the guys less than a day of two of ownership.

As GTOguys says it really wasn't that bad for performance, but at at that time anything associated with emissions was considered evil.

Now days these parts are "sought after" for restoring these cars and are $$$$$ if you can still find them.
