Original owner of my SWC went to Vietnam in '65 - not sure which branch he served in - but never returned. I learned this from the second owner, who bought it from him just before he left, and is the one who sold it to me.

Melting Slicks
Served in US Army from 65 to 68 but never made it to Nam. Spent my time in Panama (18 mos.) and then back to Fort Ord, CA. My first ride in a C2 was with a vet who returned from Nam and had ordered a 67 Silver Coupe with a 435 in it. I knew I had to have a C2 after that ride.

Racer
SSGT, USAF Cam Rahn Bay, RVN 1968-69. 555CES/HR, Red Horse Squadron. Into muscle cars then. Ordered a new 69, SS396 from my hometown Chevy dealer (Friendly Chevrolet, Springfield, Ill) while in VN. Married with two kids, didn't think a Vette would work for us. My wife picked me up at the St. Louis airport in it. There were 107 miles on it.

Drifting
I still have the '63 vert that I drove from MI to boot camp in Pensacola FL in 1964. Two Tonkin Gulf yachting tours, aboard USS Oriskany and USS Chicago.

My MOS was helicopter crew chief, but I spent part of 1966-1967 at Cam Rahn Bay on the central coast. My Martin guitar I carried with me (still have) got me reassigned from some field unit where I was supposed to be going to the HHQ company of the 35th Engineer Group at Cam Rahn (longer story . . . . . ).
I bought my first Corvette, a silver blue with navy interior 1963 327/340 HP convertible with 4:11 gears, both tops, and a close ratio 4-speed in St. Louis upon my return stateside from a fellow who owned a place in the GasLight square nightspot area (the going place to be at the time).
Don't have the '63 any more, but do currently own a 1966 Mosport convertible with auto tranny and a 2005 LeMans Commerative Edition convertible. Sold a 1965 coupe factory air car that I'd owned for 39 years not too long back. I decided I really didn't need three Corvettes . . . . . . . .
Corvettes and good guitars have been two of the things in life that I've got a lot of satisfaction and enjoyment out of. They probably fall in just behind good friends and family . . . . . . .

Ok, I have the R66 Roadster and the 68 RS Convertible ready for sun and fun, but of course it is cool and raining in Illinois.
Just curious how many Vietnam veterans driving C1 or C2 Vettes there are on the forum
I served in the Mekong Delta from Jan 70 thru Dec 70 with the HQ Company of the 69th Engineers.

If you were at Cu Chi you must have been with the 25th I.D. I was with 7-11 Arty at Tay Ninh, Katum(Firebase Denny) and Dau Tieng in 1970. Shot some Arty for you Rangers during the Cambodian Incursion, their call sign was Bruiser 50. When the 25th went back to Hawaii I got transferred to the 1st Cav with the 2-19 Arty at Phouc Vinh and Firebase Apache(near Xuan Loc). Welcome home!!

FT. Knox, Meade, Polk but never got tag to go to Vietnam. But I was scare just the same. I was at Ft Polk when Kennedy got killed. Really scared then as that was not like today. I just knew we were going to war with somebody. My 63 was purchased from a Viet Nam guy who did not make it home. I think about that when I'm out in the car, wondering what he must of been like and if he got lucky in my car.
