1965 original honest car, needs everything
ive been wanting another midyear very bad. Sometimes, too bad.
I've got a friend potentially selling his 65 327 original motor (rebuilt in the 80s I believe- not in the car). He's owned it for ~30 years and never really did anything to it.
It's red with white and black interior.
Almost everything needs to be redone. I am concerned with the frame... Haven't got under it too detailed but cant confirm its condition. Bird cage seemed good but also want to look closer. The bird cage would be a deal breaker to me.
I just feel if I buy and finish this I will have been better off buying one done... Labor of love perhaps.
He's hoping for 20k out of it. Thoughts?

$20k to buy it and looks Like everything needs to be done including paint, I think you'd be way ahead buying one already done (or close to it).

May not be the car for you but someone will want that for close to $20k.

The windshield post looks pretty bad.....$$$ looks like a money pit, especially when you start digging deeper....

The bird cage is the killer. I've been looking for a mid year coupe project for awhile and all the ones I've seen ,the bird cage are gone. By the way that window post looks, I would suspect it has serious bird cage issues. You'll need to removed the windshield trim and kick panels as well as the back trim behind the seats and look. Also look at the cargo barrier and where it ties to the lower rear door post at floor level. I'm not afraid to purchase a car with a bad cage but the price has to be right. Does he have the bright work?

Certainly understand wanting a midyear bad, but what is there about this car that attracts you?
Now if you've always wanted to do a complete, ground up restoration with cost being not a major concern -- this could be a candidate.
But not for $20K IMHO. A serious spousal-abuse victim.

Thanks guys. This is exactly why I went and looked 7 months ago and walked away... Resurfaced in my mind the other day. Heck, my dad and I had a running and driving split window project for that price a few years ago.
I want a midyear but I can wait.... Just bought my first house and getting engaged any day... I don't need it now.

But - what the heck is going on with the back of the car? Why does the rear end sit so low? I have never seen a C2 sit like that unless something is terribly wrong. Has the rear suspension been disconnected? Has the rear frame rotted through and collapsed?
I think your original decision - and the opinion of others here - is correct. This is a money pit. Walk away...............

I think about the only thing that car would be good for is as a parts donor.

I'm guessing the spring is disconnected from the trailing arms. If this car is complete it would make a great start to a restomod. Throw out the frame of it looks like we assume it will.
I can see the value being in the teens or upper teens. Yes, it needs everything addressed and, no, it isn't a winning proposition financially to restore but if you wanted to build an Sriii frame LS car it is attractive in that it seems to be substantially all there.
Add my vote, though, that meaningful birdcage rust would drop the value and make many people (like me) walk away all together.
All said...I like it in a strange way.

It looks a lot like my '61 did when i bought it in '74, 'cept my car didn't have any rust; seats same ripped condition, interior looks about the same, paint about the same, parts everywhere inside the car and trunk...
It calls out to you in some primal way.

Don't see it as a total money pit. But you will need to buy it at a better price.
Needs a lot of work. But if you are doing most of the work yourself with minimal labor cost it is feasible.
It will take a LOT of time and if you have a family and a job, it will take even longer.
If it was near me I would think about it.

Did you say there was 20K in the glove box or under the transmission on the passenger floor?
You will have 80K into a 50K car.
It always amazes me how completed cars get nickeled and dime'd to there lowest common denominator, yet this rolling pile of parts will bring 20K?
