Default What does the digit "3" in front of GM on this 870 engine block number mean?

What does the number "3" right in front of GMon this 870 engine block mean?
Does it mean that this engine block is casted in 1963?

Or does it mean shift 3 or something like that?

That's the pattern number, used at the foundry for internal traceability on high-volume castings that use multiple patterns.

Well, it would appear that either someone doesn't know what they are talking about, or someone has gone through a lot of trouble to change a bare block that's worth a few hundred bucks, because below is a pic of the area with date on the same block. Can you provide documentation that 1963 blocks did not have the clock on them, or is this just hearsay you are repeating?

I am not cancelling the party yet . Its a December 5th 1963 I would think its a early 64 block .Not installed in a 63 corvette.

I may not remember what I ate for dinner last night but for some reason while helping judge 63's sometime in the mid 90's I vividly remember the team leader ripping somebodys motor for having that clock. I never forgot that for some reason. Maybe he was off his rocker but I doubt it. I havent been involved in that crap in decades but like I said, I remember one car getting hammered on that clock deal. Maybe the rules have changed in 20 years and now its been proven to be BS. Maybe someone whos into that stuff now can chime in.

Perhaps that could be the answer. Wonder where some documentation could be found on this?

Odd that date on your block faces front, and on my bare block it faces rear, like the 3782870 does.

Here is my May 29th car's block... No 'time dial' but the date is clear...

My block also has the "3" on it...

Here's one of several 1963 327s with "clock". This one is said to be Engine Block: 3782870. Casting date J-13-3 October 13, 1963, by seller. I see the "4" that rtruman was pointing out.
