Default Opinions on this fuelie?

The bug has bitten again and I'm on the grind now, looking for a good '65 fuelie driver. Asking price on this one is $79,900. General thoughts and opinions? Flak jacket is on

Well, it certainly looks absolutely gorgeous! Other than that tho, I don't see how there is any where near enough information provided to be able to offer an opinion?

Agree with Tux...

But if the birdcage/frame are squared away... the #Match with no vin/trim tag/Pad shenanigans....

$70s would seem right for a Real Fuelie....

Super pretty color, love it. I've never heard "fuelie" and "driver" in the same sentence, though.

I know, right? Just got a wild hair

Some back story on the car:

Dealer says it was taken in trade from a local collector who has over 100 cars, sat in his collection for the last 35 years. Original Goldwood Yellow resprayed maroon then a cheapo respray back to yellow, complete with plenty of overspray and overlap on brightwork. Body filler visible around headlight buckets obviously repaired. Glass appears original except windshield. FI unit just rebuilt and still being sorted out. Undated replacement brake master with calipers just rebuilt. Mostly original engine compartment with new dated DeWitts rad. Repro KOs. Original exhaust system still intact. Black vinyl interior ok but clock bezel broken off and ammeter kaput.

I drove the car and was utterly unimpressed. My 300 HP '63 with L79 cam and TH350 auto feels much stronger from 0-60 - MUCH stronger. Steering wheel was 45 degrees off center and car pulled strongly to the right.

With all its issues I was willing to trade my SWC for this car. Dealer had B@LLS to ask for $25K cash plus my '63. Told him I'd think about it.

Sent an email thanking them for their time, and said I'd be better off selling my car myself and paying cash for the '65 - just trying to be polite.

Here's the kicker: late last night the dealer sent me what I thought was a sarcastic email, saying that if my car was worth $75K then his '65 was worth $100K -- he then thanked me for the "education" and said he'd instruct his sales manager to raise the price to $98.8K. Lo and behold this morning I received a CC of his internal message to staff confirming the price increase, and sure enough, the price on his website has been raised from $79.9K to $98.8K!!!!

This was all supposedly based on my visit yesterday, when I "educated" the owner (who's been flogging Vettes in SoCal for over 30 years) about the "true" value of his car... wow!!

Just wow. Now all C2 Corvette owners should thank me for magically increasing the value of everybody's car by 20 thou -- no problem guys, all in a day's work for yours truly!!

Default Forgot to mention...

Apparently the dealer sent the engine pad stamping to Grenning for affirmation. Grenning declined to certify the pad because, according to the dealer, despite the thousands of characters in his database, he couldn't find any which match this very special example.

This dealer still has no problem insisting the engine is all matching numbers and must be the original, born with block, because nobody was doing restamps 30 years ago, right?

Honestly the pad looked good to me, but Grenning couldn't certify - end of story.

Typical used car salesman. After your description of the car, I don't think it's worth 79K....much less 98K.

Yup, it's on the web site for $95.8k

Sounds like his driving impression was a little different than yours....

From the web site ad:

"1965 Chevrolet Corvette 327-375hp Fuel I Coupe Goldwood Yellow

1965 Chevrolet Corvette 327-375hp Fuel I
Click image above to view larger photo.

Goldwood Yellow w/Black interior, 327/375hp, F.I., 4-spd manual transmission.

The '65 Corvette marked the end of one era . . . and the beginning of another! By '65 Corvette was entering the "World Class" category with the introduction of standard 4-wheel disc brakes and the mighty (one year only in the Corvette) 396ci big block engine. But it was also leaving behind the legendary 327ci fuel injected Small Block engine. Up to the intro of the 396, the "Fuelie" 327 was the more powerful engine you could get in a Corvette! And at 375hp, this solid lifter engine was and still is a beast!!

This '65 Fuelie just arrived after being in hibernation in a private collection in So. Cal. for over 35 years! It was in the over 100 car collection of a very good and renown collector client of ours. It's very original with a correct #'s matching fuel injected 327 and 4-spd. transmission. The F.I. unit has been rebuilt and the brakes have just been done. It's been painted a couple times, but the interior is believed to be original and in excellent condition! The engine runs strong! Having just driven the car, I can attest to that! It's equipped with power windows, AM/FM radio and knock-off (reproduction) wheels with white wall tires. This is the last and best year for the fuel injected engine. It's also the rarest of the mid-year fuelies, being 1 of only 771 built in '65! Stk #5808

Price: $95888
In Stock Now! | Stock#: 5808 | Mileage: 44898

LOL @tux

I know, that little writeup is what got me driving freeways for an hour down to Anaheim!

I tried all throttle settings in all gears and gotta say - if that car has 375 hp mine has 475

Then the salesman couldn't get the car restarted after it sat for 10 minutes (in all fairness to the car he was pumping the gas like a maniac, definitely not the way to start a hot fuelie). I actually felt sorry for him for a few seconds -- until I remembered the deal he'd just offered me!

I'm surprised you could make it in only an hour! When I came down to visit my daughter in Irvine two weeks ago we stopped for lunch at Duke's in Malibu. It then took us two hours to go from Malibu to Irvine via I10 and I405 - on a Saturday afternoon!

You got that right... but seems to me the battle has left him a little shellshocked. Truth is he doesn't give a flying fork about the average customer anymore, if he ever did. He's got a 100 point '63 Mickey Thompson Z06 tanker and a flawless '69 L-88 on display in his showroom, '67 435HP cars all over the place, gorgeous SWCs in the service bay, big dollar stuff coming and going all day long.

He arbitrarily upped the price on that '65 by 15K just to prove a point to me -- basically telling me to take my car and stuff it, mine ain't worth crap and his is gold plated.

A successful used car salesman, for sure.

I wonder how many of those '67 435 HP cars are original.......... there seem to be more of them around now then were built by the factory!

Sounds like that particular '65 isn't gold plated - just repainted....
or maybe fool's gold at that new price..........

Thanks Joe, I sent you another PM letting you know I cleared some space - sorry about that. You should be happy to know the value of your car went up 15K yesterday

I've got a little data base of old ads, etc. Send me a PM with the last 5 of the VIN, maybe there's an old ad selling a 300HP yellow coupe. I haven't seen Mike for a few years....thought he was smarter than that.
