Default Doug Nash 4+1

Will a Doug Nash five speed work in a 63 roadster? It has a Muncie in it now.

Don't know if it will fit or not John, but I can tell you that it's a heavy son of a gun!

I've thrown muncies, as well as top loaders up on my shoulder and put them in while standing under my lift.

I just put a 4 + 1 in my '55 Nomad. I can tell you that I strained a little...more like a lot!!

Good luck with your installation!

That should work anywhere a Muncie was. Need to modify the rear mount. Search under Richmond 5 speed here and in C3 as there are lots of threads. Also look at the Richmond instructions for the mount modification explained. I am putting one in my 69. Really good transmissions!

The Nash is longer to accommodate 5th gear. That moves the shifter back and may (probably will) require opening up the transmission tunnel to clear the linkage. Also, the rear mount is further back and your cross member will have to be modified as stated.
If you are up to the mods, it is a great transmission. I have a street version under the bench that I raced in a 71 Vega for years and never broke it, but broke everything behind it (driveshafts, axles, gears, carriers, clutches, etc.)
The one i have was a bit noisy on the street due to the M22 style gear cut.

Why? The Richmond five-speed is difficult to install with the body on the car. Given that fifth is 1:1, it doesn't offer more relaxed highway cruising, and first is nearly too short to be useful unless the axle ratio is really tall.

If you're not happy with the Muncie ratio set, look at the Richmond Super T-10. It's available in three "progressive" ratio sets with first gear ratios of 2.88. 2.64, and 2.43:1.

It would help if you would provide engine configuration and axle ratio data.

What Duke said^^^. Unless you change your rear gears to about a 2.70-3.00, you won't be getting much if anything out of the swap over what you have now.

I actually have one in my '55 210 and I love it. I knew it was slightly longer because I had to modify my driveshaft and move my cross member. What I am concerned about is if the shifter will work with the center console.

I was thinking if I change the rear in my Vette to a 3.08 I will have a 3.27 first gear for a quick launch and 3.08 gears will essentially give me a small over drive compared to the 3.73 rear I have now.

unless you have a love affair with the Doug Nash, and have one already, or have a hellofagood price on one; I'd go with a modern 5spd kit with OD that will fit out of the box...

I agree. Take a look at a TKO 500 - available with a 3.27 1st gear and a .67 OD 5th! I love the one I have in my 1967 !

Same here. I have the Tremec 500 and a 3:55 rear in my 1966. Can cruise all day at 70mph (1900 rpm).

What rear gears do you have? With 3.73 gears, my first gear in my '55 was useless, I had to swap to 3.25 and it still has a very short 1st gear.

If you are talking about the Richmond 4 & 1, no need to cut the tunnel and they are not longer than a Muncie.

Much info here:

I see that the OP's pictures in the link I showed are gone. He used a Hurst shifter and it sat too high, so he modified the bracket to lower it. I believe a Long shifter fits without mods. ML67's pic below.

I had a Doug Nash in my 1961 - it fit but tight. It was a hoot to drive but with 4.11 in the rear end it wasn't much of a highway cruiser - but stop light to stop light it was hard to beat! I sold it when I started my restomod project - wish I would have kept the transmission as it never let me down....
