Holley carb refit for 3124 396/425 HP
Hello, just attempting to start engine for first time after rebuild with 3124 holley carb, after setting bowls its dumping fuel into crankcase, bought it on ebay just for numbers, yes probably junk. Don't want to mess with it until engine up and running properly, looking for advice on best new replacement carb, holley 770 (770 cfm) or 4150 (650 cfm), these were touched on in previous threads but looking for a little more wisdom on subject? Thanks in advance!!

The turn around time of some of the carb rebuilders is pretty quick. Depending on what you want, you can get functioning great and looking "OK" for $2-300, or Show Room with all the bells and whi$tles for $$$

Thankyou, just got off the phone 📱 with holley Tech, said 4150 750 cfm closest carb with mechanical secondary, manual choke tho, l bought the 3124 10 years ago, was rebuilt then, l suspect sitting so long needs another rebuild?

If you want fast - I would get a rebuild kit locally and rebuild it. Should be up and running in 1 or 2 days most. If the carb was previously rebuilt it probably doesn't even need dunking. Get a couple cans of spray carb cleaner. Also a can of NAPA gasket softener unless it has blue gaskets in it and you will be set for probably about $50 total.

This is who we used to restore our #3124
http://www.vintagemusclecarparts.com.../gallery1.html
Eric did an awesome job on it...Literally looks like new. I think we spent about $450 total because I wanted it all replated as well. He turned it around in 2 wks door to door.
Another option is a good ole #3310 Holley. However your factory heat riser tubes/choke stuff and pcv tube will not work with it.

Pay attention to the secondary accelerator pump arm/spring and make sure its not hitting the base of your air cleaner....and make sure the air cleaner is not compressing the arm when you tighten the wing nut.. You will likely have to space up the air cleaner base a little or "ding it" inside to clear the arm.

Yeah the accelerator pump arm will hit the breather pipe on the air cleaner base. On our 65' 396, I lightly grinded/dinged the breather pipe on the inside to clear the arm. It would still occassionally hit so I ran a couple extra air cleaner gaskets on top of the carb to space the air cleaner up some. Ofcourse doing this, makes your breather pipe/hose a little short so you'll have to tweak that some.
I eventually went back to the #3124 after VintageMusclecarparts restored it, it works well, fits everything correctly and allows all of the factory stuff to reconnect, however it definitely doesn't "HIT" like the mechanical carb did...and I always wonder "if the secondaries are fully open"... For cruising around its fine though.

Thanks good to know, i'll pay extra attention to secondary alignment, aren't the secondaries on the 3124 mechanical too?, At this point just want a decent running engine to move forward getting the car on road and bugs worked out, before you know it be putting it to bed, thanks for the input!!

Well installed the 4150 holley, defiantly running better, not dumping fuel, tried to set timing on engine, backfiring a bit, attempted 2 different timing lights, can't get them to work, another day of uphill fighting this car!!

Sent carb back, still dumping fuel, ordered 4160 with vac. secondaries, Car still backfiring through exhaust. On my 3rd oil change.
Tried 2 ignition systems, T.I as original and then points, same result.
Fuel pressure 7.5, is this too high for holley?, may have to install regulator in a otherwise stock fuel system.
Running out of ideas.
