Is the wave dead?

My wife and I took the '61 out for a Sunday drive yesterday. At a main street in town a new BMW roadster slowly passed me and gave me a wave. We were later both stopped at the stoplight and he looked over and gave me a thumbs up. I acknowledged.
I think that is the first time a driver of a BMW, Mercedes, or Porsche ever waved.

This topic came up on the Chevelle Forum a few months ago. Similar responses all around. When in my SS, I always wave at another old car, regardless of make/model. Most of the time, the wave is returned and if not, so be it...Having just bought a '67 convertible, it's good to know the protocol is to wave at all other Vettes, regardless of era...will be sure to try that out when I'm cruising! Many folks probably honestly just don't know this...kind of like a secret handshake.

I first learned about the wave in high school back in the mid-60s with my Austin Healey bug eyed Sprite. Never could afford a Corvette until I retired so my car life up until then consisted of a series of small British and Italian sports cars. Other owners of these cars always waved. My theory is that they started the wave, not as a friendly "hello", but as a signal to "Please stop and help me. My car has broken down again."

Secret handshake?? C'mon guys... a WAVE of the hand is pretty universal for "Hello". Harley riders wave... all groups wave....
I wave at all pre-1972 cars! Yes, even Mustangs!

The (young?) C5 guy probably had no idea what kind of car the OP was driving, so no wave?

Out on the left coast when I am trailering my 63 SWC around I get thumbs up, the circular thumb and forefinger cool sign, and fist pumping but rarely a wave. Things are different today!

Here in Wilmington, the wave isn't used too much. I wave at any "old" car, not just Vettes, and sometimes get a wave back, sometimes not. Pretty rare for the other guy to initiate a wave. But, back home in the Pittsburgh area, the wave was alive and well.
