Default C1 Brake service in Mpls, MN.

Looking for an experienced drum brake service company in the Mpls. area. Years ago I was told of a company that many of the local guys used and somehow lost the contact info. My '62 is pulling badly and the adjusting screws are not responding like they should. Might be more than I want to tackle. Thanks

The contact "you lost" may be Corvette International Inc. in Maple Grove, Mn. 763-428-5020. He has done a lot of Corvette mechanical work over many years, sells parts and has quite a machine shop that makes parts for most of the national online suppliers we all buy from.

Called 5 places yesterday, and nobody wanted to work on C1 brake drums. So, I called Eckler's and ordered new hoses, clips, cylinders, spring kit, and brake shoes. Looks like I will do it myself even though it has been 30+ years since I last tried installing them. Not hard, just messy and time consuming. At my age I would prefer paying a professional to do the work.
Just venting but thanks for the help. Skip

Next time, look at Rock Auto. I recently bought Raybestos drums, brake shoes, cyl. rebuild kits, hoses and spring kits for less than 1/2 of what the Corvette suppliers charge.

1snake, thanks for the info. I checked my price against Rock and they were a $1.29 cheaper using all AC Delco parts. Being in WI shipping may be less, so I will check with them next time. Thanks again

Switch to DOT-5 while you are at it!

Redbird, thanks for the tip, but silicon is still debated as a good choice. Previous posters showed good and bad results with DOT-5. I chose DOT-3 because it was close to what was used back in '62, and it absorbs moisture. Which is better?, who knows. I went with general opinions, and I like to stay as stock as possible with everything. The former owner had installed headers, and that is the next item to go. Thanks again.

Good call on the DOT 3. I also used Rock auto for delco brake parts for my '61 last year when I rebuilt the entire system. Excellent service and quality. Will use them again. The brakes on a C1 have got to be the simplest drum brakes ever designed. Very easy to work on. Make sure the backing plates are in good shape where the shoe tabs contact them (not grooved), use a little door striker lube on them and on the adjuster threads, make sure the drums are all about the same inside diameter, and you'll be set. The factory drums on my '61 feel like disc brakes, they stop it so well.

GTOguy is right. The brakes on a C1 are very simple and straightforward. I have done brake work on both my '57 and '61 with no problems. The ST-12 explains the process well. I do not consider myself an expert when it comes to repairs on my Corvettes but brake work is something I would never hesitate to tackle.

You should join our local Chapter of NCRS. We have a ton of guys in the Chapter that know a lot about C1s.
