Thinking of getting a Tremec 5-speed in a few months and have read about the shifter being spring-loaded, causing shifting to be a bit different. Is it possible to remove the spring which would then allow shifting similar to the Muncie?

i'm not sure that would be a good idea as:

the spring keeps the shifter from rattling

and, there are essentially 3 'slots' in the shift pattern: 1-2, 3-4, and 5th/reverse. the spring keeps it in one of the 'slots (3-4 I believe), so that you know which way to go for which gear.

I don't know if its possible, but I don't think you would really want to do that. The spring keeps the shifter centered when in neutral, so that it is always underneath 3rd and above 4th. That way you can always tell where you are by feel, and just let the spring guide you from 2nd over then up to 3rd. Without then spring centering action it would be hard to tell if you were headed for 3rd or 5th.

It is different than the Muncie since that trans has no 5th gear to worry about hitting by mistake on an upshift from 2nd. The Muncie you can (and I did many times) just slam from 2nd up to 3rd. The Tremec you have to guide there and let the spring do part of the work. It takes a gentler touch than the Muncie on the 2 - 3 upshift.

My experience is that for street driving it works just fine once you learn how to use it properly. If you want to drag race and slam the shifts, stick with the Muncie. You don't need an OD 5th gear in the 1/4 mile anyway!

Thanks to all who responded. I hope that with practice, I'll be able to shift as fast as on the Muncie.

You will experience a whole new set of pleasures that will quickly replace the pleasures of the Muncie. I loved the smoothness of the Muncie and now I love the gated discipline of the TKO. AND... if you ever want to hear 3900 rpm cruise on interstate again just go down to 4th. My son may go back someday, but I'll never.

Any and all recommendations would be appreciated as well as who would be best as a vendor. Also who to stay away from. I'm working with a restoration shop for installation.
Thank you for responding. I had great feedback on a recent rack & pinion

My mechanic is in the middle of installing the Tremec 5 spd I recently purchased. It is not an easy installation by any means. I'll provide a full update once it's finally in............

For that very reason MAKE SURE you'll be happy with the quality of the clutch/PP. My mechanic also said it was very tight. He installed mine twice. Mine now with a Dual Friction and the SST 600 is just wonderful. The second install labor is way more than a high end clutch kit.

My Tremec 5 speed is installed. It takes a little while to get used to the shifting compared to the Muncie. When in 5th, it quiets down nicely. I even notice in 4th the RPM's are lower than the Muncie when in 4th.
I haven't had much driving on the highway but at 50mph, the RPM is in the 1350 range. I think my rear end ratio is 3:36. Not positive on that though.
The installation isn't by any means easy. It's not a plug and play. The cross member parts that come in the kit needed modification. The tranny has a close fit to the floor. Installing the clutch disc was a bugger.
Overall though, I think it was money well-spent just for the fact that the engine runs at a lower RPM.

Glad you like your new transmission. Over time as it gets broken in, the shifting will get smoother. I like being able to carry on a conversation without screaming. As for your 4th gear, there should be no difference in the rpm with a transmission that has a 1 to 1 final ratio. Both the Muncie and the Tremec's fourth gear ratio are the same. Jerry

36couper,
Glad the transmission is working out for you.

Also, that car is gorgeous! Some day I want a 65/66 Coupe to go with my 66 convertible and yours looks fantastic!

I installed the Tremec TKO500 10 years ago (Keisler) and have driven 19k trouble free miles. Great upgrade to the '66. My gear is 3:55 and tire size P205/65/15. RPMs and MPH in 4th gear are 2000/43 2100/45 and 2200/47. RPMs and MPH in 5th gear are 2000/63 2100/66 and 2200/69.

I have done 2 TKO600s...both were with stout 383s...one was backed with 4:11s and the other 3:73s...the 4:11s were better match to the TKO600, .64OD in my opinion.

Side note: The TKO500 & 600s have slightly different gear ratios. For example, the gearing of a TKO500 tends to make the 4:11s not as favorable...first gear is really short. However, the TKO600 has a taller first gear and the 4:11s actually do quite well.

For those that have 4:11s, you don't have to change the rear gear when you add the TKO...just get the TKO600 and you will be fine.

Cheers,

Frank

Just wanted you all to know that I had the Steeroids Rack & Pinion installed as well as the Tremec 5 Speed in my 66 Coupe with the 327 / 300 & 3.36 rear end. Ordered the Tremec from Silver Sport Transmissions. Both vendors were excellent to work with. And how was the following test drives? Absolutely AWESOME. This project was the best thing I've done and it just totally transforms the car. I can't say it often enough! It's just great!
I really appreciate all that you folks did in answering my question with great support.
Your recommendations were spot on.
Thank you very much!

Yup. Really glad your SST experience was good. Did you go with the base provided clutch assy? I was really impressed with SST but not so much the clutch/pp. All other components super. Great company. Transforms the car. Cheers

Yes and the more I drive it, the better I like it. Just really getting used to it but as I said, I think it's a keeper!
Thanks Frank
