Default 1967 Stamp Pad

I took this motor in over the weekend as part of a trade. I don't need another one so my thoughts were to try and reunite with the owner of the car or just sell it. The pics are not great but wanted to get the forums thought on VIN stamp. The matching number power glide is available for $250.

Everything looks to check out as a 67 327 with powerglide. Two questions: thoughts on the VIN stamp and should I buy the trams to keep them together? Not sure I'll ever find the original owner.

I think I see 7108555 as the VIN derivative. If that is correct, the car (coupe or convertible) is NOT listed in the NMVTIS.

I think the likelihood of reuniting is slim. The owner of the car has probably already turned it into a L88 car.

Thoughts on the stamp (more out of curiosity)? The 555 seems to have a ghost 5 above the first two and then the last 5 is questionable. I can't imagine any reason someone would fake this.

The VIN derivative definitely has some ghosting associated with it, or maybe a double tap. From looking at the pad surface, could it be a grind out?

What ever it is, something strange is going on with that VIN stamp, and it's not just the "555", that "8"s funky too. It looks like an "8", but it's shadowed too, so it might be a "9", or even a "3"????????

Looking at it again, you are right. The middle of the eight doesn't seem right.

I'll have to un crate it and clean it real good to see better. I remember a post a long time ago by JohnZ showing the tool they used. I thought all 7 of the numbers in sequence were stamped at once? Looks like only the last 4.

Again this is not going anywhere and will probably be in the 4 sale section soon. Just curious.

You're right, both sets of stampings were done using a gang holder. They only changed the last digit in the holder, as the stamped each VIN. So when they went from 08554, to VIN 08555, they only pulled the 4, and replaced it with a 5. The only time they would pull more than one digit, is when they went from 08559 to 08560, or 08599 to 08600, etc.

It's possible that someone might drop the holder, or pull more than one digit by accident, but generally the only time the holder normally was emptied, was at the end of a shift. Because of this, any anomalies that were in the VIN stamp at the beginning of the shift, were still there at the end.

When there was a factory grind out, there's often a shadow of the old numbers, left behind. A closer look at the pad, might reveal whether the VIN was hit with a hand grinder, and restamped?

Let me get it uncrated, scrubbed and into the sun where I can take a better pic.

Just to be clear did the gang only hold 5 digits? If so, when did the 7 and 1 get stamped? Also, this would be #8555 on the production line in 1967, correct?

Thanks for all the info.

No, the holder held all of the stamps, so the whole VIN derivative was stamped in one hit.

Flint and Tonawanda had similar holders, so the plant code, date and suffix code, were all stamped at once also.

You said the matching trans was available too. Have you compared the VIN stamps to each other, as they should have been stamped at the same time.

No mysteries there. An honest old pad where the holder bounced and he hit it again

It is my understanding that the gang holder had seven digits. Photo of my 67 stamp pad.
