Default heater/vent dials of 64 illumination

The dial inscriptions are supposed to light-up with the light coming from the bajonet fixed under the clock. The effect is not very convincing...is this normal? I tried filament bulbs and led...

yes.
pretty normal.
52 year old technology and design.
It's all the little archaic details like these and many others that make old corvettes (and all old cars for that matter) special.

Well then that's the best your going to get. Would love to know what they were like when new. I will agree they can be a little dim.

I cut the top 3/8" of the bajonet, installed a small angle LED to limit sideways spill over of light that may appear from under the dash cluster. Dials look much better, update after sunset

YES..I use LED's where the factory lighting design was rather poor at best. And I am NOT worried about 'judging' eyes.
