2 piece rear main seal 1964 327.
I just bought a 2 piece seal from a local supplier and he said the seal for my engine is the same as a 1955 to 1958 seal.
I don't think so, can someone confirm this.
I believe a FelPro BS11829-1 is correct.
Can someone confirm this?
The engine is a 870 casting number late date code from a 250 HP, PG passenger car.
Thanks,
Bruce B

I don't have those books handy right now to post the numbers, but '55-'58 used the old "rope" seal you cut with a razor blade, and '58-up used the pre-cut 2-piece elastomer seal.

John,
That's the FelPro seal that I installed.
Interesting that they supply a oil pump coupler.
I changed my pump drive rod to one with a metal coupler which I forgot to install last time.
Thanks,
Bruce B

Beginning in 58 (late I believe), ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL small block 2-piece rear main seals are the same up through 1985 (86 went to 1-piece rear seal). There are different grades/qualities of 2-piece seals, but they are fit the same----------------and that even includes the SB400. As John mentioned, the EARLY SB V8s (55-58) used a rope seal which is NOT, repeat, NOT compatible with the later 2-piece rubber seal. ALTHOUGH, a 2-piece rear seal for the 55-58 blocks is available from the aftermarket sources. It is a special design to replace the rope seal (best invention since sliced bread) and is NOT available through the regular auto parts stores like NAPA, O'Reilly, etc.

Bruce,
That is the correct seal number for 59-85 small blocks.
FelPro's description for BS11829-1 is "offset, double lip, improved design.
I would assume the lip of the seal is moved to compensate for any wear on the crank.

I believe they supply that replacement oil pump shaft coupler due to the originals becoming brittle with age and very likely shattering or at least cracking when removed to replace the seal. Always throw those in the trash and replace with a metal coupler like you did Bruce.
