Please, post pics of that car in the sun after it is washed.

would be neat to see the original color.

I recently cleaned out the interior and trunk and noticed where the paint was never exposed to the elements the color is somewhat close to the color of a new penny. For lack of a better description, a little on the "pinkish" side.

With the family history, I would keep the car. I like your plan of getting it back in service and operable without doing a restoration and therefore, keeping its history intact. It's a neat looking ride as it sits, and as I've said, it is THE knockout style-wise of all the C1's. Keep the pictures coming!

I also saw a spot by the drivers kick panel on my aztec copper 57 and it did indeed look like a new penny. I have never seen a A C 57 look like that color. Color deviations all over the map so my interest is piqued in what your car looks like all shined up..

Keep it. You can always sell it at anytime in the future. You can see how guys on here are jumping at the chance just from your thread. That should give you a clue. with it being your dads car I would never let it go.

In the image I started this thread with, notice the fuel filler door.
That's an example of the color - as my display reproduces it.

if you sell it as it is you will might see about $45000. a 57 with a 270 and 4 speed is very desirable. to make the car an enjoyable driver, as others have suggested, you start by rebuilding the master cylinder and replace or rebuild all the wheel cylinders. replace king pins and wheel bearings. rebuild fuel pump. drop gas tank and clean it. tank might need to be coated inside. for wiring, at least change ignition wiring. purchase a set of radial tires. replace radiator with a dewitts direct fit radiator. you'll need new carpeting and at least bottom seat covers. all this will be on top of what might be needed if you have engine problems. you mentioned the chrome bumpers. if they don't clean up to your liking, they will have to be replated.

At 27K miles the kingpins, steering, etc are essentially new and the brass radiator worked fine then and will more than likely do so now. Don't throw anything away.

Forget my $45K estimate. Because it was your Dad's car when new don't sell it for any price.

I was thinking the same 45 to 55K

We all would like to get it for 20-40k but what if you were selling it?
Try and find another.

It would be hard to blame you for wanting to recover the seats, but if you do they probably won't match the rest of the interior. Restoration is a slippery slope, often leading to a lot more work than you originally intended. I hope you can leave it as is, but if not be sure to save any original parts you take off of it.

Not sure how to approach this. The vinyl is brittle and the foam buns are petrified.

Suggest you take your time while deciding which way to go. The car's been sitting since 74. It can sit longer while you explore your options.
I suggest you remove seats, remove seat covers, discuss with good trim shop. Perhaps buy new inserts and new foam, maybe it will match color of bolsters. Maybe trim shop can disassemble covers and sew in new inserts. Maybe not.
The point is don't rush because there is no need to and making correct choices now will save disappointment later.

Why not pull the seats and the carpet; wrap them in vacuum bags (the plastic ones that allow you to remove the air with a vacuum); put those items into storage; replace the seats and carpet with comfortable and useable new seats and carpet? You will preserve the "originality" and have a car that is enjoyable to drive.
