I always wondered what happened to the car. He may have shipped it back to the states, but who knows. Maybe the Viet Cong turned it into a planter, but I got feeling its still there. Also many old motorcycles over there at the time. Harley 'K' models, Sportsters which U.S. Aid had sent over years before and some of the American's later on bought.
wow.... I have been telling the story for years about seeing a white 61 when I was in the delta in 66-67 that was being driven around the country by a blond stripper that did the club circuit.

no one else remembers that car but me, and I often wonder about how it got to Vietnam and what happened to it...

The only thing 1958 about it are the trunk spears. While the seats, dash and door panels have been replaced from the original 1958 only pebble grain, the hood is not louvered and the dash gauges (speedo, etc.) are later as the indication marks were dots in 1958, not hash lines. Also, "Corvette" was spelled out in white on the passenger side cove stainless and the horn button emblem markings were also in white on 1958's only.

Verses a true 1958 dash:

Yea Bill, that ones a little over the top. Mine ain't. I suspect maybe a embassy staff member may have shipped this particular "red corvette" over years prior to me seeing it and then sold it off to a civilian which was common at that time. I think the owner, known as "Rick" may have been a defense contractor like me at the time. Not sure what company he worked for as I did not know him personally.

RMK/BRJ?

if you had seen her you would have remembered...., it would have gotten her safe conduct anywhere/everywhere...

and then there is the yellow 67 RHD I saw in Hong Kong, I guess that's "over the top" too....

When I was a Chassis Production Foreman at Willow Run in 1964, occasionally we'd get a government contract for right-hand-drive Chevy II 4-door station wagons, that specified 4-cylinder engines and 3-SPEED MANUAL transmissions - you can just imagine the Rube Goldberg column shift linkage system and clutch linkage it took to make that happen. Yes, they used a special bellhousing with bosses and tapped holes on the right side for the Z-Bar ("cordon shaft"), and a clutch fork opening on the right side.

They were the worst dogs you could imagine - they didn't have enough power to get on the upper deck of a haulaway truck without frying the clutch, so we used long cables and a forklift truck to PULL them up the ramps. Most of them went to Africa as part of some "Hands Across The Sea" program, with big Mylar decals on the front doors.

Hi,

My Vette has a TH400 (I know, I know!!) and rack and pinion steering. So I cannot answer any of your questions.

Cheers
