Conv Top Weatherstrip Questions
I bought a conv weatherstrip kit fro Knoch. Searched installation and could not find the info I need. Questions I have:
1) Do I need a "retainer kit" for the window weatherstrips? Are these metal re-enforcements for the side WS?
2) I think I need a retainer for the front bow. Correct?
3) The kit did not have a rear bow weatherstrip. Does a 58 have a rear bow weatherstrip ?
4) Does the header bow weatherstrip go on after the top is installed?
5) Does anyone have any install pictures. Cant figure out how the lower corner WS with the metal insert is attached.
Thanks

1. For the rubber side window weather strips, yes, there is a metal retainer that holds the weatherstrip to the frame with screws through the retainer then the weather strip through the frame into "t" nuts.
For the cloth covered weather strips (early to mid 58) they have captured studs that go through the frame and are held by lockwashers / nuts (this is what is on my car)
2. Yes, retainer for front weather strip also.
3. 58's used a mohair weatherstrip for the rear bow. Some late 58's may have transitioned to the rubber one. There is a gasket there either way
4. Yes. Screws into the header after top is secured to the tack strip.
5. I have a pic somewhere....... Went out and took one - in the middle of a top right now. Two screws into rear bow then one screw into frame and a screw through the weather strip goes through the bracket also.

Rear bow weatherstrip installation, How's it held in place?
I have the Al Knoch Convertible top installation DVD you can borrow if you want.....

Thanks for the picture...those are missing on the car we are working on. Already ordered from Paragon.
Hello from Germany,
We have a '57 fuelie in the shop, and the rear bow weatherstrip was a rubber item, and completely shot. Should it have a mohair weatherstrip or the rubber one?
The big problem is how is the doggone thing held in place? It was a real fiddle getting that lip wrapped around the rear bow. Even with 3M super weatherstrip adhesive, and staples every 2" it is impossible to keep the thing in place. The moment you try to open the rear deck, the corners of the lid pull the thing off.
The installation of the top is another issue...way too tight. I will get pictures next time I am at the shop.
Thanks in advance for your help.

This is a really old thread. Start a new one with your questions, and you'll probably get a better response.
Since I'm here......The 57 used a mohair rear weatherstrip, which is stapled to the rear bow tack strip (assuming you have the correct top frame, and rear bow). Side glass weatherstrip is fabric covered, and not reproduced. Best you can do is cover some of the 56/60 w/s. Use black w/s adhesive. When you attach the "filler" pieces in the picture, the 56/60 attaches with 3 screws. One at the front, and two into the rear bow, just short of the mohair w/s. When you staple the mohair in place, there is a fabric "flap", that you will glue down to cover the staples. Rubber w/s will not work.
