Default JE Block I.D. Help

Hello, My brother has asked me to assist him in selling a 427 Block for him. Before I do this I need to see exactly what he has. I would appreciate an opinion if this is a 1967 435hp 4sp Corvette block. Thank you in advance.

Well - a JE would be a 1967 427/435 block. I assume it's a 4-bolt block.

Might be worthwhile to check out the VIN and see if the car is still around.

Edit - checked in the registry and it's not listed there.

Yes, 4 bolt. It was tanked and crack checked a decade ago or so. I have no documentation so I plan on bringing it to a machine shop soon to have it tanked and checked over again. I need to know it is sound and if it is standard bore or not. Thanks for the reply.

From the pics it looks good to me. Sounds like you have a sound game plan.

1967 Corvette # 113744 does not show up in NMVTIS, either as a coupe or a convertible.

Interesting though...cast A 25 7 (January, 25th, 1967) and assembled 0306 (March 6th, 1967). Well within the realm of possible, but still a bit of a stretch.

Not really that uncommon for big blocks. Although the foundry at Tonawanda was on the same site as the engine plant, there are many documented cases of big-block casting dates preceding pad-stamped engine assembly dates by several months. Modern inventory control didn't exist in the 60's, and raw block castings could sit at the foundry for some time before moving the short distance to the Tonawanda engine plant.

The ten days between engine build and car build dates (birthday calendar for 13744) are typical.

Thanks for the information gentlemen. It's going to the machine shop today. Hopefully it checks out well and is standard bore. If you sent me a PM and did not hear back from me it's because I can't figure out how to reply. It does not seem to be giving me that option.

The picture quality of the engine stamp is not the best however if I had to guess, I would say that the stamp is legit. If you can get a better picture of the engine stamp, that would be great.

I would not let the machine shop deck the block - just on the chance that car turns up somewhere. The original 427/435 block would be worth a lot to the owner of the car if it's still around.

And if it's gone to the great junkyard in the sky, someone will probably re-create the car out of a 327/300 horse car and also pay a lot of money for the block.

Second that, don't deck the block.
