How does one change the oil in the rear end?
I was changing the oil in my 64 and thought I would check and possible change the gear oil in the differential. Sliding back on the creeper and looking up I was reminded that it is nicely tucked up in there nearly out of sight. So I thought this would best be done another day after asking for instructions from the forum! So, HELP!

If you have access to a fluid pump that siphons the fluid out of the fill plug that's the easiest way. If not your going to have to remove the back cover and drain it that way. But that is a lot of work. So find your self a pump.

To fill you can use the suction gun in reverse on the new fluid OR use a section of plastic tubing (Tygon) about 3-4 ft long with a funnel on one end. One end of tubing in differential hole and route other end out the rear wheel well and slightly above top of the tire. Put a pan underneath the differential in case of overfill or spill. POUR the rear axle fluid and posi fluid thru the funnel.

I bought one of these years ago (but cheaper then) to extract fluids:
https://www.amazon.com/Mityvac-7201-...CXP9GEXQATYHKM
You can find them in the $80 range if you look hard enough; I thought it was a lot of money at the time but based on how much I use it and the ease of changing fluids; if mine breaks I'll have another one on order immediately:
As for filling the AmSoil hand pump is the easiest thing going and can fit in tight places for topping off fluids:

Go the any hardware store and get one of these little pumps and some tubing for use with your hand drill.....easy peasy. About 8 bucks. Also handy for stealing gas.......

The easiest and more fun way is to light up the rear tires and see how many tire tracks you left on the pavement. The sensible way is to jack up the rear and spin one tire. If both spin you have a posi. If not you got a peg leg

3000 RPM and dump the clutch. Powershift into second.

If you jack the car up to turn one tire to see if the other also spins - if they both turn in the same direction it has posi - if they turn in opposite directions it's an open rear end.
