Fifteen years......I still can't believe it!
Woke up in the dorm of a Fire Station, to watch this atrocity.
As we were thinking, and talking of a terror attack, the second one quickly confirmed our suspicion.
For fear of starting a political debate, I won't even speak towards what I think of how our Country is now being run!

I had just gotten off duty after the night shift as Captain of Truck 3 (Syracuse Fire Department). I was home checking my e-mails when my youngest son, in college at the time, IM'd me to turn on the TV - which I did, just in time to see the second plane hit. It was immediately clear what was going on, and we were told to prepare to report to New York City if necessary, as it was unknown at that point if their FD personnel losses would be in the hundreds (it turned out to be 343) or the thousands. Out of 412 SFD members, 412 offered to go . . . to do whatever was required, for as long as necessary. We did end up sending crews down to work at Ground Zero in the recovery operation. The sights, sounds and smells will never be forgotten. The anguish, profound sorrow and sense of loss will never be forgotten. The brave, selfless sacrifice of our brother firefighters and their colleagues will never be forgotten.
The price of liberty is eternal vigilance. We will not forget. Rest in Peace, my friends. We will meet again.

It's impossible to get past how the New York City skyline was changed.....forever.
You're too kind. Released and contract terminated. Let them go somewhere else and see if they can make the same kind of money.

I was there 2 days later to work a protection detail on one of our federal judges. The buildings were still smoldering and ash still filled the air. It was such a surreal place to be...especially while trying to continue our normal work. Everyone was still walking around in a state of shock to say the least. During my time off I went into several of the affected fire stations to donate to their survivors funds and as you can imagine it was a very emotional time. Numerous community posting boards were on the streets which were filled with posters and pictures of individuals that were missing and many families were still praying that they were possibly alive and displaced in a hospital. Our protectee attended numerous funeral services during the time I was there (3 weeks) so I was able to meet many of the families...It was definitely a time of reflection and a moment in time to put life and such into perspective...

I was on the DC Metro under the Pentagon when the plane went in. Spent the rest of the day in the Department of Justice/Office of Justice Programs Command Center in contact with all the 3-letter agencies tallying the death count and military response. 40 people crammed in a room sitting at computers and on the phones -- not a dry eye in the house

I walked out of the office into the conference room because someone screamed OMG, then I saw the second plane strike. As a former VFF in three depts in the metro area, 343 is a painful number. Dennis

One thing that's so bothersome to me is the so many people in this country that need to be reminded of this annually.
I remember a couple weeks ago driving home from Carlisle and passing Somerset on the highway and thinking about Flight 93. It occurred to me how often I think about 9/11 even today, 15 years later and generally without any prodding whatsoever.
And so many people basically disregard the ongoing threat of terror in the country and are more interested in not hurting anyone's feelings while talking about it. It's sad.
For our brothers in blue and the firefighters and the victims and their families and our citizens and everyone else touched by this unforgettable atrocity.
